I want to remove the crankshaft in my 582 grey head C box to inspect it
and replace the seals.
Is there any way to dis assemble the engine without using the specific rotax pullers?
They are detailed in the LEAF and CPS catalogs.

Hey Cecil,

What you want is a harmonic balance puller. It needs to be a good one
with hardened threads.

Then you need to go by a good hardware store and get the bolts to match
the flywheel and the mag ends.

Warning: If you screw the bolts too far into the magneto end you will
ruin the lighting coil.

Also, you will have to brace against the puller itself while tightening
to keep it from rotating. Don't use the crankshaft fixation pin for this
as the torque could tweek the crankshaft off alignment.

Also, buy the Rotax protection mushrooms. I think they are like $20
each but otherwise you will ruin the crankshaft ends.

You can use the exhaust manifold to align the cylinders when you put it
back together. Also watch the length of the 4 bolts that hold the RV
cover in place. If you put the longer bolts in the bottom and start
tightening the bolts will bottom out against the bottom casting and
break off the mounting lug. The bottom casting now has to be welded.

BTW, there is very little inspection that can be done on that
crankshaft. The roller bearings that are in the bottom end of the
connecting rod can only be seen through a small slit. If any damage or
corrosion is in there I doubt you can see it.

Also note that the design of the crank changed in the mid 90's. They
went to a larger journal and bearings in the connecting rod. To allow
for this the bottom of the connecting rod is machined to allow clearance
to the crankcase. The original connecting rod is not machined and
matches the rest of the rod. It was a weaker design.

FWIW,

Mark Napier

you still need the rotax gear puller for the PTO end to change the seal. I broke down and bought one for changing the gear ratio on mine.

The harmonic balance puller is what I used to pull the flywheel from the
PTO of my 582 also with a C box.

I didn't use the fixation pin as I didn't want to put that much torque
on the crank. Instead I just used another bar lever in-between two of
the bolts to push against while tightening the puller.

When you changed the gear ratio how did you pull the big gear off of the
output shaft?

Best Regards,

Mark

the rotax puller. I made a jig to hold the prop flange, then heat the gear up as it has red locktite on it. the rotax puller will pop it right off. I will be doing it again this time home going back to my 2.62 gears as i had better performance out of them.

and I may have lied to you.. I know on a "B" box you dont have to pull the pinion gear off the crank to change the seal. I cant remember if the "C" gear is larger though. I will check it out when I get home next week and see if you can just slip the new seal on over the pinion gear.

Go on the CPS (California Power Systems) Web site and order their catalog.
It is full of very useful info.   www.800-airw2lf.com
or
www.leadingedgeadirfoils.com their catalog is very good but smaller.

Both are rotax dealers with detailed descriptions and pictures of parts and tools.
