I have an older 601 HD kit that I built, s/n 6-1911 that I have been
flying
around for 3 1/2 years now, and would like to know if anyone has
changed the
rims and tires for more rough field use. I know this would also mean
making
wider forks, at least on the mains, since they will only allow for
4.80x4 tires. Also, the kit came with thin aluminum 1
piece cast rims with x spoke pattern, that I was told came from an
Italian
motor scooter manufacturer, with "Grimica" 1.5x8 on them, and that
they might not hold up on rough fields? Can someone with a 601xl tell me
how wide the front fork is and what size tire it will take, I know the fork
on a 701 is 8" ID, but that is a bit of an overkill
anyway if anyone has been through this I would like to hear what you
did so
I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel.
Thanks
Tom McCarthy

Tom,
My 601HDS, #6-4117, started 1999, uses Matco 8.0 x 3.5 wheels. The O.D.
of the S-83 Michelin
tires is 15 inches and is intended to roll easy on soft ground. I
believe this is about right. I don't
think the Matco's are available any more, but there must be a good
source for the size somewhere.
My Michelin tires are motor scooter tires and rated 375 lbs with safety
factor that makes for 485 lbs
at 36 psi and 30 mph. according to Michelin. I use 21.5 psi and touch
down nearer to 50 mph.
If you're working 4.8 wheels, I'd recommend you find the Matco or equal
out there that works with a
hydraulic brake system. I seriously like what I have as they roll easily
on damp sand.
The forks are 123mm wide by 222mm axle center to top.

The front fork on the XL is about 145mm wide inside and is designed
for a 5X5 aircraft tire.
