Re: Towing the Kitfox on a trailer, Lynn your suggestions are excellent but
I have one question. My trailer elevates the tail wheel and the main gear
sits on a platform only one foot off the ground, so the plane is nearly
level. But I decided the extra shock absorption of the tailwheel spring
would be a benefit, since the tail surfaces are unsupported while towing. I
will accept your wisdom if you have good reasons.

I decided to thread the cross tubes on the aft fuselage and found that the
only tap in my set which would cut nice threads was a 9mm x 1.25 metric tap.
Then I discovered that 9mm bolts are hard to find, so I made some from 3/8
bolts. Then I realized that foreign car repair shops have lots of them
laying around from engine rebuilds. I think that is the size for Honda
bearing caps. But after all that, the bolts make a much easier connection
than running a threaded rod through the tube.

I didn't weigh all the 582 components in my plane, but I think the total
installation is only about 120 lbs, including water.

Mine sits about the same way....front wheels in a "well" of sorts,
maybe 8" off the ground. The tailwheel is slightly elevated, and you
are right, the tailwheel should maybe be sprung somewhat....I was so
engrossed in getting the load off the tail spring, that I just built
two stiff bars to take the load off. I should have used a telescoping
spring arrangement to elevate the tailwheel, but give the frame some
spring. Good call, Ed. I think some folks were dropping the tailwheel
onto an inflated inner tube, or some other sort of "springy-thingy."

Maybe if I leave mine alone, I'll never have to trailer it ever
again....yeah, that's the ticket!

Damn! I was planning on flying down to New Carlisle, Ohio, to take
part in a unique "hometown" parade that day. It's kinda cool.....fly
to the airport (private), and have your plane towed in the town
parade by a tractor, golf cart, lawnmower, whatever, and then it is
towed back to the airport, and you fly away home. When I heard about
this at MERFI, it sounded like a fun thing to take part in.
I'll have to think about it, Pat. Damn....too many things
happening at the same time.

More on the tail wheel thing.....I was following the advice of the
group, or maybe it was in the building manual where it said to remove
the load on the rear spring. Now maybe this advice was given as the
result of rear springs being broken, possibly when they had the Grove
single-leaf springs, or the single main leaf and one helper spring. I
don't know. But your point is well taken...soften the ride of the
plane in some way.
