I have a Zenith CH 701 and a Jabiru 2200 SN 988 (should be 80 hp) with a Bing 40 mm carb and second generation tuning kit, that is, OD3 needle, 290 needle jet, but 230 main jet.

Static (tied down) max RPM, with my Prince P-Tip 64x26 prop, is 3000 RPM and EGT’s 1200F +/- 20F. In flight, climb 55 mph 3000 RPM and EGT’s 1200F +/- 20F. Level flight WOT 3120 RPM. Cruise EGT’s are about 1300F.

Static max RPM with a Tennessee Propeller 64x34 is 2820 RPM and EGT’s 1200F +/- 20F. In flight with the Tennessee prop, climb was 500 fpm or about half that with the Prince prop. Cruise about 4 mph faster or 74 mph at 2850 RPM.

Since Jabiru USA supplies a Tennessee 64x36 prop for their CH701 Jabiru 2200 (85 hp) firewall forward kit, I thought I should get more static RPM and performance from the Tennessee prop.

I put the Prince prop back on and thinking it could be my air flow, I did static tests with (1) filter removed from air box, (2) a 3.5 inch tube on the back of the carb and (3) nothing on the carb. Static RPM was same with filter and no filter, however, with the tube or the plain carb, the RPM was 40 less and the EGT’s on front cylinders dropped to 1135F, and rear cylinders were about 1225F.

CHT’s run about 220F. I have always used 100 LL fuel.

The blade area of the Prince prop is about 15 % greater. Any ideas why my WOT RPM is limited?

Chuck,
I'm in the midst of looking for a better prop too and am considering going to a ground adjustable but before I do I'm sending my Tennessee 64x34 prop back to TPI,Inc. for them to see if they can improve my WOT rpm. For comparison purposes here are my numbers on my Kolb Slingshot with Jabiru 2200A #1574 no tuning kit with about 240 hours.

Static RPM 2832
WOT at Vy of 65 mph 2924
Vh (WOT straight and level) 92 mph TAS 3072 RPM
Preferred Cruise 80 mph TAS at 2640 RPM

Very good, interesting information. I am using a Sensenich prop on my 701 w/2200A #2456 with a maximum RPM of 2970 in both climb and wot cruise. The prop specifications, according to a representative from Sensenich, was originally requested by Pete at Jabiru USA for use with the 701 FWF package. The prop number is W-64-"PJ"-36. A recent conversation with Pete about this prop confirmed the RPM's above. I recently purchased this completed plane and I am working through cooling issues. To mount the oil cooler where I wanted it required the removal of the muffler and I will add a 4 into 1 header to the existing primary pipes and will jet the Bing accordingly.
Chuck, is'nt the P-tip designed to flex for climb and cruise ?
Don

I forgot to mention that I used to own a 701 with 582 which had a 2-blade 64" IVO prop. I generally cruised at 72 mph at 5800 rpm (6500 redline) but it was thirsty at 6 gph at that speed, which was about 85-90% power.

Below is a quote from Zenith about the CH701 and the Jabiru 2200. It is why I asked about my 701/Jabiru performance.

"With the Jabiru 2200 engine installed, the STOL CH 701 boasts excellent S.T.O.L. performance while being very economical to own and operate. Take-off roll is less than 100 feet and rate of climb is an impressive 800 fpm. Cruise performance is 80 mph, and stall speed is 30 mph. The design can also be built from component kits or scratch-built from available drawings (blueprints) and manuals."

Recall my complaint about my low RPM at WOT when looking at the CH701/Jab2200 (Tenn prop 64x36) performance numbers published by Zenith. Thinking it might be my airbox installation, I tried everything from no filter to nothing on the Bing carb. No change in static max 2820 RPM with my Tennessee 64X34. My good buddy, Bob, has a Jab 2200 in his Sonex and offered to static test my prop. With his Tenn 54X46, he gets static 3050 RPM but with my Tenn he got 2770 RPM. Our EGT's were about 1200 F. His engine is #852 and mine is #988. Both should be 80 hp. Anyway the 64x34 is too much pitch for my 2200. But at least my air system is OK.

Chuck,
Mixture will be a critical factor . Too rich or too lean at any particular power setting will cost heaps of rpm. You could make some well informed tests with a different jet size or different fuel bowl level but research first.
If the engine is still tight the prop may slightly overload it making it too rich at WOT. Look for black smoke and plugs.
