All-
I'm down to my last skin, trying to complete every job I can think of that would turn me into a pretzel after I close in my cockpit. I'd like to hear about the things you guys regretted not doing before losing your access. There has to be something I missed.
Thanks.

Hi Bill,
Have you completed your instrument panel yet?
How about engine installation including all the controls? Cabin heat?
It's not over until it is airborne with all the instrumentation you want. . .

My advice is to make your front top skin removable. or make access panels in it. I guarantee you will need access behind the instrument panel at some point.

John-
It's in the works, but I have to figure out and incorporate a slop guard to accommodate my header tank.

Paul-
Panel is complete and everything has been tested with the exception of the transponder. All engine control cables have been run through the firewall, but I haven't (And can't at this point) installed a cabin heat duct. Here's where I get into a Catch-22.
I built my fuse on a rollaway jig and can't hang the engine until I attach the last skin and remove the jig, leaving the fuse on the gear.
From everyone's suggestions, it looks like I've done all I can.

HI, Bill.
I wish I would've installed soundproofing on the cockpit side of the firewal BEFORE that top skin was done. And on the floor from the firewall to the main spar as well...
I covered the process in KITPLANES a few years ago, and still think it was well worth it.

Done, as well as on the cockpit sides. It looks good enough to where I'm
not going to upholster the sides.

Bill,
Glad to hear it! The only thing I might add is some automotive door edge molding to the edges...

I guess I don't understand what you are seeking.
In Aviation, there is absolutely nothing you can do to:
"Avoid Misery Later"

Rick-
Edges of what, the forward top skin?
Did you build an HD/HDS? If so and have a header tank, how did you
configure your fully removable top skin to keep fuel from dripping through
the inlet and slopping on the panel? I have the standard Zenith 8 gal header
tank and inlet.
Chime in, HD/HDS people.

Bill, I found an easy and sure way to avoid fuel dripping on the panel: I "gots" no header tank.
Cheers

Hi Bill:
I adapted an Ercoupe "grommet-engine cowling", p/n 415-40430, which I got
from Univair Aircraft Corp in Aurora, CO. That grommet fits the HD/HDS
header tank neck diameter. It was necessary to remove some rubber from the
upper surface of the grommet, since the Ercoupe header tank has a longer
neck than the Zodiac tank. Of course the hole in the upper forward skin
must be sized to fit the periphery of the Ercoupe grommet. My project is
still unfinished, but I know from experience that the grommet keeps fuel
from leaking around the Ercoupe's filler neck.
Hope this is helpful.

You bet! Send any pictures you have of your installation. Cockpit gets
closed up first thing tomorrow.

I don't have a header tank, I was just referring to edges of the ribs in the cockpit, between the chunks of soundproofing foam. And I did use the same stuff on the edge of the upper skin. You must be psychic!
