I am seeking some wise words of advice from the pioneers that have gone before me please, just to make sure that I've covered all my bases before closing the bottom skins.

Could someone please tell me if there are any prudent things that I should consider prior to riveting on the bottom wing skins?

To date, I have routed all the wiring through conduits which pass through the ribs; installed the pitot mast and plumbed the pitot line; installed the pitot heater module; installed the roll servo and I've assembled the aileron trim mechanism.

Is there anything that I may have forgotten to do please, you advice would be very much appreciated?

Kind regards from down under.

Besides the fact that it may be a lot harder to rivet on the skin with the servo in place, it sounds like you have it covered. For those who are in the decision-making process, installing the roll servo in the wing after it is closed up is not a difficult task. I can do it laying on my back on a creeper (with the wing on the plane) in about 15 minutes.

I ran a nylon fish tape out through the conduits (2) on each wing for later wiring or maintenance. Fast- cheap- light. Who knows what kind of gadgets will be available in 3-5 years

The bellcranks should be there; I don't think they will impact bucking. The pushrods should be sized and test fitted. Final install can take place after bucking. Also be sure that every attach point for the wiring is accessible from an access panel. Don't clamp the wiring bundle somewhere it can not be reached for removal or repair.

Test fit bellcranks and pushrods, but it would be very hard to rivet the skins on with them installed.

John, did you have any issues with bucking the rivets?

Any tips for rivetting the bottom wing skins?

Many thanks for your response John.

To answer your question, I installed everything, including the push rods before closing.

FWIW - I think I made similar comments previously but -
I did mine in a vertical stand, one person.
I found that a small tungsten bar was very handy but not exclusively.
The lighter, bigger iron bucking blocks were also useful
Thank Deems for the safety wire technique to hold up the skins (see
photo if I successfully attached one)
Remember to check that the skin doesn't overlap or bind on the leading
edge skins - I had to file mine down to fit well - It's painful if you
find out too late

Hey Bill,

ANC in the shop? Maybe a MP3 player in the mix too?

Now that's hearing protection!

You like that 'eh? I got that headset as some sort of thank you gift.
It worked well but since I prefer Web listening, I just used the ANC.
That is until I was doing some job near whirling machinery and decided
it was safer to give up the ANC... so I snipped the cord off.

The real challenge was getting a wireless internet signal into a metal
hangar 200 yards from the router. I'll have to post a picture of my
"Cantenna".

You wouldn't like my hangar workshop then....no phone, no internet.
Just TV and radio and microwave/refrig to distract me from
building.....and the half dozen other builders in nearby hangars
working at most anytime.

Man's got style for sure...

I wish I could figure out how you guys keep your workspace so clean. Mine
looks like an EPA Superfund site most of the time.

Pat,
I did the same thing Bill did, except my wife shot the rivets, so I didn't need the safety wire thing. My cradle looks just like his. Bill's advice on trimming the skins so they don't touch is the most important part. It took about a dozen frustrating fittings and filings before I riveted. No oil canning.

Many thanks John, I learned that aspect of the skin joints when I did the top skin at the point where the fuel tanks were installed, requiring a slight trim to ensure no oil canning.

Many thanks from downunder for all the great responses.

Regards

Pat

At least the neighbors don't look at you like you're nuts for mowing the lawn with an ANR headset on. Let's me listen to some music and keeps me from going deaf, well, from the lawnmower at least. Smile
