All,
I don't want to start the fuel controversy going, but have a
specific question regarding contamination. My friend has a IV he's
trying to get running. He's using auto fuel, presumably with alcohol,
(CA,) in Kreemed tanks. He has two of the clear filters, one for each
wing tank, and one more metal cased filter downstream of the fuel pump.
The problem is that the fuel is coming out of his wing tanks
piss yellow and seems to be plating the filters with some kind of
invisible residue, rendering them impassable. As we haven't done much
flying yet we haven't seen the plating in the carbs or intake
manifolds yet, however I expect to. One more symptom is that very
small flecks of rsome ed/brown substance is coming out of one of the tanks.
My suspicion is that someone at some time left fuel in the
tank and it dried and varnished the bottom of the tank. (We've tried
inspecting the outlet area with no success.) I don't think it's a
Kreem problem. It could be a resin problem if some of the tank we
can't see didn't get covered with Kreem. Does anyone have a good
recipe for removing varnish, without removing Kreem?

Guy, my kitfox 2 has the same problem I'm going to strip out the kreem and use a tank sealer this week end , I have had piss yellow gas and small flake come out of the tank . I feel that the kreem was not all over the inside of the tank or it was not clean enough when it was kreemed year ago to with stand the 10% we get today. I do siphen out all the gas each day to fold the wings . I have 125 hours on it , I thought it was breaking down the resin in the tank mine is the old tanks from the 90's ,I just ordered some from kbs tank sealer we will see, Jerry

Here is some info on a filter that I took off a plane this year.

No problem with the tanks but the gunk that collected in the paper filter.
I personally think that if you are using paper filters that I would be very cautious. It is ethanol/water or other junk that is making a mess of these ? I use gascolator and have no problems at all with it or my glass filters with plastic screens.

I have over 800 hours in my Kitfox in last few years alone with ethanol gas and NO KREEM -- go figure !!

I never check my wing tanks sumps.
I fell out in my hand about 5 years ago and I put in epoxy and it never leaked since. I afraid to touch other one in fear it leaks.
It not much of a sump anyhow on those tanks.
I have inline glass filter from wingtanks prior to main tank. And a gascolator before fuel pump.
Maybe I just lucky ? Working on my second thousand hours in this Kitfox IV now !!

Easy fix! Replace the original "O" rings with VITON (material that they are
made of) "O" Rings. Works on 3 aircraft at our local airport using 10%
ethanol. No leaks, or other problems with sump drains in the last 2 years
on these aircraft. Cost was 6 cents per VITON "O" ring at a local gasket
supply house.

Dave,
Excellent example of why you don't use a paper filter (although that gunk probably would have collected on a metal/plastic screen as well) When I went to Lockwoods Rotax school they emphasized to NEVER,NEVER use a paper filter. With ethanol in the fuel the water that is absorbed by the alcohol can make the filter impassable for fuel.
