List,

Saf-Air sells a "push and turn to lock open" drain valve for the Jab. 2200/3300 engine. However, it is my understanding that Jab has moved the drain from the bottom to the side (as is the case with my 3300). This makes the straight Saf-Air valve useless. Has anybody found a 90 deg. nipple that makes this valve a good way to go? ACS P/N 05-00986

...or maybe another mfgr?

Thanks,
Mike

I purchased my Curtis valve with a 90 deg connector from Pete at Jabiru USA.
It works well and makes oil changes a breeze. Dont even get my fingers

I bought a quick drain valve, I think through Spruce, tat would not work when I tried it. I contacted the manufacturer who happened to be located in Chandler, AZ. He was just finishing an elbow to fix the problem. I got to install the prototype on my 3300A. Worked great although it was a little expensive.

I'll bet you get 'em dirty when you change the filter, though. : )

That is why I just got mine from Pete. Curtis, in Chandler, was about the same price but atleast when I got it from Jabiru USA I knew I would get exactly what I needed with the correct 90 deg elbow.

Curtis (and Spruce) also sell a quick drain for Jabirus. The Spruce p/n for
the Curtis drain for the Jabiru is 05-03698 ($31.75). And they have a 90
degrees adapter. The Spruce p/n for the Curtis adapter is 08-06258 ($49.75).
You can buy them as a pair for $79.95 (Spruce p/n 05-03540).

I was referring to the mess that runs down the side of the engine
from the filter, then...in my case...behind the aluminum tunnel that
houses my oil cooler. I try to catch it with paper towels, but some
always gets by. I made an aluminum tray device to try to catch the
oil, but it's more of a hassle than it's worth, so I have just
resigned myself to plan on a cleanup at every oil/filter
change....and they come often, the way I fly.

Lynn,
Had a buddy who would punch a hole in the filter and let it drain where he could catch it.I never thought it was very sporting.

Not very sporting, indeed! I once bought one of those "hose clamp-
hole punching-drain tube thingies", and used it once. I guess deep
down I didn't think IT was too sporting either. : )

I change the oil on mine with a suction device through the filler tube
straight into a container.

Its a bit of a long job as the tube diameter is small but nothing to unscrew
and no mess at all

It seems to me that you wouldn't be getting all the *possible* junk
that might be laying at the bottom of the pan that way...just a thought.

Hi,
it had ocurred to me but I suppose there could be `bits` which don`t flow
out through the drain hole either. Does anyone introduce anything (petrol?)
to help swill out the last drop of sludge?.

No Petrol but I run up the engine before draining the oil. This way it will
drain easier, quicker and hopefully stir up some of the stuff on the bottom
of the pan. The filter should get the rest?

Pat, I used to know a Porsche mechanic who recommended a double oil change for this purpose. Change the oil, drive around the block a few times to get the new oil warm and through the system, then drain and change again. His justification was, "oil is cheaper than engines". Of course that was in the days of 50 cent a quart oil. Still...... Smile

I've even thought of running the right side of the plane up on a
block of wood....2x6 or something similar...to insure that the drain
plug would be on the low side, but never bothered.
