|
|
When I attended the engine conference, it was mentioned that some radios just don't work well with the jabiru. I can't remember exactly what caused the interference.
I am about a month away from needing to make a hard decision on which radio to use in my Zenith 701 and for a lot of reasons I am really interested in the MGL V10. I do remember someone saying that the Garmin radios seem to work well with the Jabiru, but I hate to be boxed into only having once choice.
What is everybodies' experiance with radios and the Jabiru engine? Can anyone vouch for certian brands or models? Also, does anyone know if there are corrective measures that can be made to take care of the interference?
Any advise would be appreciated.

Hi Ben,
I have a 2200A and a MicroAir M760 in my X-Air Hawk and don't have any problems. I chose the M760 because it's (relatively) cheap and also doesn't take up much panel space. As they also make them near the Jab factory in Aus, they should be compatible!
My best advice on interference is to use a single ground location for all of the electrical stuff on the plane and then connect the batt -tive and the engine crankcase to it as well. I've done this and don't have any interference problems from the engine, strobes etc.
Hope this helps.
Ian

Hi,
I'm new to the list. Finished my project this summer and have 21hours on the
engine.
I have a Jab 2200A on Kolb Mark III Xtra with a ICOM IC A200 panel mount
and a CI-122 VHF COM antenna. It is perfect up to 1250 RPM. Aproaching
2000RPM radio noise in the head set becomes intolerable and transmissim
impossible. Cockpit noise is a contributor but not the primary cause. Have
had several knowledgeable friends evaluate the problem . Their advice is buy
a different radio.

Hi John
We have a Jabiru J160 with the same radio and it works fine. We also have a Pioneer 200 with a Xcom radio and had a similar problem to you. After trying many different options we replaced the voltage regulator with a Powermate regulator and now have great transmission and reception that is noise free. www.powermate.com.au (no connection etc)
Regards
Keith

John,
Unless your iCom A200 is broken, your problem is not the radio. I had the same radio in an Allegro 2000 and it was the best quality transmission and reception I've ever had. Of course the cockpit of the Allegro was pretty quiet compared to a Kolb.
I now fly a Kolb Slingshot w/ Jabiru 2200A and use an iCom A6 handheld with antenna mounted on boom tube and get great reception. However, above about 2500 rpm, the cockpit noise makes it difficult to hear, so when I need to use the radio I just slow down a bit. Kolbs are very noisy but it sounds like your problem is not related to the noisy environment but electrical interference of some sort.

No noise here, also using an ICOM A200 panel mount radio.
