Here is a short article from a Flight Safety Briefing Sheet that my airline
puts out to the pilots when we get a Jeppesen revision. I thought the L-29
group might find interesting....
I know there was some discussion recently about recapped tires.
Topic: TIRE FAILURES
Recently, a tire failure caused an abort of one of our 747-400's. It turns
out that many of our tire failures are attributed to foreign object damage.
Retreads are often mistakenly thought to be the cause of the tire failures.
The fact is, most of the tires on our airplanes are retreads. However, the
process of retreading an airplane tire is very different from the process of
retreading an automobile or truck tire. There is no structural difference
between a retreaded airplane tire and a new airplane tire. the retread for an
airplane tire is a solid piece that goes over the carcass of the old tire.
The retread of an automobile or truck tire is simply wrapped around the old
tire and the ends of the retread are then glued together. A retreaded airplane
tire is actually more reliable than a brand new airplane tire because the
brand new tire is not "broken in" yet (i.e., heated, and expanded, then cooled
and retracted). Proper tire pressure is another important factor regarding
tire failures. An under-inflated (low pressure) tire is more susceptible to
failure than a properly inflated tire. It is very important to check tire
pressures per SOP's. (Standard Operating Procedures)
The airline actually has permanent tire pressure gauges on the valve stems
that can be read during preflight.

Scott good info. This was a topic at the CJAA convention we just had. We had
a Goodyear rep in that gave us a presentation on the subject and showed
slides of the proceeds of building tires and retreading tires. He stated the
same thing about retreads, better than new and most tires in the commercial
aircraft fleet are retreads. It is really a high tech, interesting process
both building and retreading. One thing I learned was that the sidewalls
have no effect on the tire strength, my mains are weather checked and he
said that makes no difference whatsoever. The rubber on the sidewalls is
just to stop FOD from getting into the nylon that makes up the sidewall, he
said as long as it is not cracked through to where you can see they nylon
then structurally there is nothing to worry about. We did ask them if they
could retread any tires, i.e. our warbird tires, and they said they did not
have the right equipment to do sizes they do not already make. There is
always Wilkerson I guess.

how was that convention? I am sorry I missed it. Are you going to the
Wendover Jet Blast? I can't wait for it..should be a great time

Greg, the convention was a good time. We had a lot of good speakers and the
tours were wild. I will be at Wendover. It is shaping up to be a big event.
the f-104 will be the highlight I am sure. 6 of us are flying in commercial
from NY. I am hosting the northeast jet blast June 9-11 at KRME in upstate
NY. I sent the Griffiss jet blast info and reg. out a few days ago to all
CJAA members so you should see it in the mail any day now. Looks like we
should have a few great jet blasts this year.
