My Wheel pants have been installed on my airplane for less than a year and I am already finding the disadvantage of checking/ filling the air in the tires. I am sure there has been discussion of putting holes in the wheel pants for access to the valve stem. Does anyone have any photos on their building sites of where to put these holes, how big, and what if anything is used to plug the holes? I would appreciate any feedback on this simple thing.
Thanks

Tim , unless you've changed your tubes to 90 degree stems, I think you're stuck with the aggravation. I've converted my wheels to take the 90 degree tubes, but am far from using them.

I am not sure I follow. My stems point straight away from the tire, does that mean I have the 90 degree stems you are referring to?

I purchased little snap in plugs at Home Depot. They carry sizes ranging from 1/4" to over 1". I think mine are 7/8". The plugs come in plastic and polished (stainless?) steel. I got the steel ones. Aircraft Spruce also carries little hinged doors if you want to spend 20 bucks instead of $2.
To locate the holes, all I did was measure the distance from the axle of the wheel to the center of the valve stem, then drilled a 7/8" hole that distance from the hole in the wheelpant where the bolt goes into the axle nut. It was probably 2" or 2 1/4", but don't trust that measurement - measure for yourself.
On mine, the hole is in the front half of the wheelpant, but I'm not sure that's important.

If the stem points out the side, parallel to the axel, then you have the 90 degree stem, and all is cool. If the valve stem points roughly in the direction of the axle nut, it is a straight stem. If you have the 90 degree stem, make a hole ..... I like the area under the wheel pant nut ..... so that the hole allows a straight connection to the valve stem. You'll need to go to someplace like a truck tire store to get a straight extension. Slip this through the hole. screw it onto the valve stem, and air up the tire. I do not put X pounds in the tire. I inflate until the outside ring of tread lifts off the ground. I was taught this by a very experienced friend. I get good, even, wear on my tires with this method. May not work with the Van's gear though .... but I'll find out when the time comes. Oh, don't make the hole very big .... just enough to get the extender through. Fill the hole with a stainless steel plug ..... but straighten all but about 3 or 4 of the tangs, otherwise it'll eat up the edges of the hole in the wheel pant. Oh yeah ..... paint a stripe if white paint on the sidewall of the tire ..... in the inside so you can see it as you pull the airplane forward ....... pointing at the stem ...... so when it's vertical, the stem should be pointing at the hole in the sheel pant.

Yes, you have the 90 degree stems. I installed camloc spring loaded doors.

Here is a photo of an RV-8 I saw at Copper State last week:

With a door this size I don’t think it matters what type of stem you have however the S/S plug and a 90 degree stem sound like a better idea to me, especially if your pants are already painted.

Linn's method works best for me, with one minor change. Harbor Freight
has this air chuck:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=41891
Notice that the business end is straight, not angled. It has a latch to
clip it on the stem. If you hacksaw off the latch, it will easily go
straight through your new hole in in the pant & you can air the tire
without an extension. (The gauge on mine is way off, but that's easy
enough to compensate for once you know how much it's off (if you even
bother with measuring pressure; some don't.)
I still carry a screw-on extension in my emergency spares bag in the
plane, but for airing tires at home the $8 tire chuck is a lot more
convenient.

Thanks Everyone for the responses about the tires. I plan to drill a hole
in my pants to accept my placing an extension through to air them up as
others have suggested. I don't think I will put a door in as I just don't
feel like messing with the fiberglass again.

I found an easy way to spot the exact place to drill the hole ... after drilling the main gear l long time ago by 'blind luck' and measuring .. I recently decided I needed to drill the nose wheel which is much tighter and harder to spot.
Just take off the pants, get a cheap laser pointer and mount it 4-5' away from the wheel on a small stand (I taped mine to a jack stand and taped it 'on'). Turn the wheel so that the LEVEL laser is pointing at the air valve where you want the hole in the pants... then put the pants back on. The laser will still be pointing to the exact spot where the valve is. Just drill the hole. Don't know why I didn't think of it before.
I found the metal plugs at Home Depot.
Just an opinion.

Great Idea. I need one of those laser pointers anyway for presentations I occasionally do.

Great idea David. I did something similar but with just a pencil mounted close to the wheel fairing. It worked but the laser can be mounted further away and still give an exact point to drill.
For the extension from the tube stem, a 6 inch flexible rubber extension can be purchased at stores supplying trucks. I found the flexible extension easier to get started on the valve stem threads than the ridget metal extension.

Excellent solution David!!! Amazing how hard it seems to come up with
simple solutions. Thanks for the tip.

I recently decided I needed to drill the nose wheel which is much
tighter and harder to spot.
Just take off the pants, get a cheap laser pointer and mount it 4-5'
away from the wheel on a small stand (I taped mine to a jack stand and
taped it 'on'). Turn the wheel so that the LEVEL laser is pointing at
the air valve where you want the hole in the pants... then put the pants
back on. The laser will still be pointing to the exact spot where the
valve is. Just drill the hole. Don't know why I didn't think of it before.
I found the metal plugs at Home Depot.
Just an opinion.

Thanks Everyone for the responses about the tires. I plan to drill
a hole
in my pants to accept my placing an extension through to air them up as
others have suggested. I don't think I will put a door in as I just
don't
feel like messing with the fiberglass again.

To answer your question it is very simple, you need an access hole (square or round)
and a plug or cover. You just have to align it with the valve stem. You'll use an air-chuck
with an extension. The most common access is round and one of those SNAP-IN
BUTTON COVERS or PLUGS (or hole plugs), in metal or plastic/nylon.
http://www.surplussales.com/MetalPlugs/MetalHolePlugs.html
http://www.widgetco.com/hole-plugs
http://www.surplussales.com/Rubber-Plastic/Plastic-1.html
You need to figure out what air tool you will use, for the geometry.
http://www.drillspot.com/products/41080/Dynaquip_AC45_Straight_Body_Air_Chuck
(this is best, with a length of brass tube as needed)
http://www.savinglots.com/lotprod.asp?item=JL5010N
(takes up a little more room with the side fitting)
Just a stripe of white paint where the air-stem is so you can align it with the
hole in the wheel pants will make it easier. Also to check the air-pressure,
you can use the same air-check to a quick disconnect. Than you just plug
in the AIR-GAGE into the quick disconnect. So you will need the following:
-Hole Plug
-Straight Air-Chuck
-Female quick disconnect
-Air-Gage with male quick disconnect
-Small length of brass tube with 1/4" NFPT (threaded ends)
(you can bend the brass pipe slightly than cut, than thread if you want a slight angle)
(if you use an angle or dual air-chuck you will need at least a 1.25" hole)
My solution was to use good quality tubes, tires and nitrogen, so I don't have
to deal with checking or filling them as often. However having access is a good
idea. However to get half back half of my wheel pants off is only a handful of
Philips screws; it takes about a minute to remove or install. So I decided against it.
Others make a square hole with a small hinged cover to make LOTS of room
so you can put in any old big dual chuck, with out having the tire rotated the tire
just the right spot.

tires. I am sure there has been discussion of putting holes in the wheel
pants for access to the valve stem. Does anyone have any photos on their
building sites of where to put these holes, how big, and what if anything is
used to plug the holes? I would appreciate any feedback on this simple
>thing.

For filling tires through wheel pants I used
KM713-16-064 -from aircraft spruce.
I also needed a tire valve extension
I got mine from Cleavland tool

I had same problem. I solved it by purchasing the "Leak Proof" inner tubes from Desser tire and rubber. I now find that I loose less than one pound of air per month. I also went with the Goodyear custome 3 tire. No problems over the last 500 hours.

I drilled I believe a 1 inch hole in the side of the wheel pant and used one of those metal covers that are used one the top of a Piper Cherokee wing to cover the strut schrader valve. Then just get a valve core extension screw it in and you are good to go. Worked fine.

So how do you deal with getting the valve stem cap on and off with only a
one inch hole? Go up from the sides or do you just not use a cap?
Thanks

bill, Use a nut driver to reach in and unscrew the cap/replace, then I screw
on the extension. Charlie Heathco

Hi Bill,
I used a short length of plastic (polyethylene) tubing with ID slightly less
than the OD of he cap. I split it to about a half inch from the end. I
pushed it onto the cap. There was enough friction to unscrew and hold the
cap. After filling the tire, I re-installed the cap and withdrew the tube.
Worked well for three years.
Regards,
Richard Dudley
