Hey folks,

I would like to make my own heat muffs for carb heat and cabin heat.

Dimension are not much of an issue however, can someone tell me what thickness Stainless steel I should use?

From some reading I see it is 304 Stainless that is used and in some cases is Aluminum. Does it matter?
Yes I am trying to save a buck, but want to make it only once.

Thanks,
Rich

Hi Rich,

I wouldn't use aluminum for this purpose. The exhaust gasses get
around 1400 degrees F, and if I remember correctly aluminum melts
around 1000 degrees F. You might wind up with a puddle of aluminum
in your engine compartment.

I don't have easy access to my airplane right now, but I would guess
the thickness of the muffs from the Jabiru FWF was around .020 or .025 inches.

Somebody better tell Aircraft Spruce. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/search/search.php?query=heat+muff&search=1

CESSNA TYPE HEAT MUFF

Heli-arc welded aluminum muff with rustproof stainless steel fins for clamping to stack.

HOMEBUILDER'S HEAT MUFFS

These superior quality heat muffs are made entirely of 6061 and 5052 aircraft grade aluminum, offset from the center to clear the close cowling of most homebuilts.

Rich,
I assume you're talking heat-muffs averse mufflers here. For conveying
heat from the muffler to the cabin, aluminum is fine for a heat muff.
I used .025 and wrapped it to a hinge joint. If you're doing mufflers,
you need a .025 or better stainless as the temps recorded 3 inches or so
from the exhaust are near 1350 degrees. You'll probably make two sets
to get it exactly right, so don't scrimp on bought material.

Larry,

Correct, not the muffler! Just the Muff on the outside of the muffler can for cabin heat

The flanges for the scat tubing themselves from ACS are aluminum and with continuous air flow aluminum should be ok.

Not trying to be cheap just frugal. I can make a few things and it saves hundreds of dollars if not more.

Thanks for the comments.

Rich,
I should have pointed you to the construct that I did. It works well and
I've only got 3/8 to 1/2-inch clearance from the muffler
for airflow. No baffles inside either. Just the hard rings at the ends
to support the wrapper.

Since you have a water cooled engine, why didn't you just run the
bypass lines through a heater core in the cabin? That would just about
eliminate any risk of carbon monoxide in the cabin from an exhaust
leak. You would also have a smaller penetration through the firewall.

Bryan,
I could easily take the heat directly from the radiator into the cabin,
but the heat muff keeps hot air out of my belly mounted radiator which
improves
engine cooling by 7-degrees F. The 1-1/2-inch hole in the firewall is
no real penetration nor worry as far as fireproofing goes. Carbon
monoxide is also
a non-issue as it's monitored at the panel. I get a 20-degree lift in
near freezing temps from my existing setup, so it works for me and is
low maintenance.

Larry!

Thanks for the pics!

They support the concept I have in mind. Combining the pics from the Zenith setup and yours I smell success.

I think I will make the first one out of heavy card stock and then try and fold the actual metal once.

Are you aware of a good source of spinners! I see the Cummins from Australia that Jabiru uses. Are there any others you can recommend for home built application?

Thanks again!

Rich

Rich,
I obtained my spinner and plates from UHS Spinners, PO Box 135, Markham,
Ont. L3P 3J5
Phone 905 640 1534
Email uhs(at)istar.ca
They make 8,9,10,11, 12 and 14 inch spinners. These are a fiberglass
product that is quite good.
