Looking for some help on my slats. I just finished both sections of the left slat and the right inboard section. The right and left inboard slat skins and ribs are different. My question, just to make sure I'm not going crazy is: Are the outboard right and left skins supposed to be different too? The reason I am asking is because my kit came with two identical outboard slat skins. I thought this was wrong so I talked to zenith and had them send me a right skin. I opened it up today and it looks just like the other two.  Did they send me another left skin? If they are supposed to be the same, i'm having trouble figuring out how to make the mounting brackets match my right wing using the precut slots for the slat mounting brackets. My guess is, I have two extra left skins and no right skin. If I am reading the manual wrong, can someone point me in the right direction?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I can't help ya with that. When I built my 801 we had to drill all the holes and create all slots so some of the panels could work on each side. I do remember that when I mated the inner and outer slats where they telescope together I didn't have the proper edge distance so I made my wing pick up points different.

Thanks Ben,
I'm begining to wish I could drill my own is some areas. I would make things slower, but I know I could do a better job.

Chane,

Left and right, both inboard and outboard sections, should be mirror images of each other.  Obviously the slat brackets on the wing should determine where the slots should be.  You can clamp the slat sections to the wing to determine the exact amount to overlap the inboard and outboard skins.  I had a very early kit.  I think Ben and I started about the same time, and I just followed the instructions as to where to make the slots, instead of measuring between the slat brackets on the wing.  Like Ben, when I went to join the inner and outer sections, I found that the skins were not long enough (either from the outboard slot on the inboard section to the outboard edge of the skin, or from the inboard slot on the outboard section to the inboard edge of the skin, or both) to overlap a sufficient distance to provide correct edge distance for the rivets joining the two together.  So I trimmed the skins to butt together rather than overlap, and made about a 2.5" wide splice piece which fits an inch and a quarter into the ends of both sections where they butt together.

Are you sure you don't have three right skins?

Chane,
I built a 701 from scratch in 94 and the right and left skins before bending could be identical. To bend, you flip one over bend them and should have one for each side.
If they are bent and are identical then you have a problem unless ZAC has made major changes to the wing design.

John,
The kit now comes with two precut slots in each slat skin. The manual says the short skin is the inboard skin. I have both short sections completed and the one long section I have completed fits the left short section and left wing. I'm trying to figure out if it is possible the skins I have are all right skins, but I can't make the slots match up to the right wing or slat section. I have even thought about trying to make the short section the outboard. The problem comes from the distance from the edge to the third slot. The manual says to measure the distance between the middle wing brackets and slid the slat sections together to match it. With skins I have the distance is about 200mm too short. I keep coming up with the same thing, I have three left skins.

Carl, The skins come prebent with the holes prepunched and slots cut from the factory. And I came up with the same thing you did, the left and right don't mirror eachother. I was just reaching for straws on an easy/I don't want to wait for another skin fix.

Thanks for the responses...

Chane
