Listers,

It seems to me that it wouldn't be all that difficult to incorporate one of
Van's NACA scoups onto the tail fairing rather than the one they showed in
the pictures. That thing looks like it would create a lot of drag.

Tim -

I couldn't find it on your site - do you have air vents? Where? Can you
weigh in on the potential importance and/or coolness (pun) of overhead
fresh air?

The Lancair ES uses a similar method to provide air to the cabin. Comes
in the tail and uses an overhead duct for distribution. It also have a
water collection point inside the tail area with a drain tube. Some of
the ES folks have installed a fan in the tubing to help with ground
cooling. I think the fan is actually a bilge pump of some sort.

My 1953 D35 Bonanza has an adjustable scoop that sits on the top
centerline of the plane and controlled by a cable. It also has a section
inside the cabin to place a wet sponge so that when the ram air passes
over the wet sponge you get a swamp cooler style air conditioner. Works
great! The added bonus is that in cool temps you just close the scoop
and retain the original aerodynamics. I think the image of the scoop
will probably look keen when complete but I sure don't want that hanging
out all the time.

Talking to Alex DeDominicis (sp?), The Sorcerer’s VOR/ILS/GS functions are removed, a yaw dampener is added.  Alex’s wife felt a lot of waggle in the back seat since it’s behind the spar, so he adjusted the software for the price of the VOR/ILS/GS.  In his -10 he can overlay any approach he wants to using the GNS480, so he sees no real loss of functionality, and he gains the yaw dampener.

Hopefully they will have it on the site soon.

I did not bother looking at the bluemountain stuff. IMHO it is to experimental for my taste. Also, I am already committed to the Cheltons.

GRT has almost everything you could want, but their graphics just stink.

ASF has the graphics and the potential if you are willing to wait.

Just think all the choices we will have when we build our next airplane. Smile

Larry,

Did you happen to see the new bluemountain geneation 4 EFIS? If you did,
I'd be interested in your impressions. It looks pretty nice on their
brochure (but then what product doesn't). I doubt I'll have the cabbage to
go with double Cheltons so I'm going to have to decide between GRT, BMA and
AFS.

For those of you putting in the overhead venting, is this for air
conditioning? If so, will you be able to reroute your heating air to the
floor in the winter, or will you output air to all the vents all the time?
What device will you use to split?

So far I haven't had any complaints from passengers. I myself did
comment when I did the demo flight that the -10 seemed to have a bit
of a tail waggle oscillation in turbulence....and I wondered if a
yaw dampener might not be a bad idea someday.

That said, from the flight down and back, I rode turbulence all the
way down and didn't experience anything that would cause me to
think a dampener was needed. On the way home, in the last few
miles, we got tossed around quite a bit and at that time I could
see a use for it...but considering the turbulence I was ok with
how it performed without. It may be a long term goal.

Rob, I think it will work with the A/C, but most will be just adding it
for the additional, and much more comfortable ventilation. I don't think
it will be merged with the heat, as it will be very hard to get heat
to the tail where it would need to be to go up to the console. The
heat would be the way it is, and this would just give better ventilation.

Many people asked me at the show if there was anything I'd do
differently, or that I didn't like. For a while I was telling
people there wasn't....but I was wrong. The front air vents
are just kind of pitiful. They put out plenty of air, if you
want your nuts or kneecaps cooled. If you put them on your face,
you lose all other cooling on your body. If you point them most
anywhere, your charts go flying. They're awfully positioned.

On a positive note, Ken Krueger did confirm that they lowered
the NACA cutout 1/4", so at least the won't interfere with the panel
for many of the future builders. That won't help the sucky location
though, but it may give more mounting options. If I was starting
over, I'd consider putting a cover plate over that hole, and
adding the vents somewhere else....and I'd definitely be buying
the overhead console. Or perhaps I'd keep the vents where they are,
but with the overhead console providing most of the ventilation, I'd
make the standard vents with those small ones, instead of the big
ones.

Larry,

Thanks for the great post on what you saw at Sun-N-Fun. I apparently stayed to close to buildings A thru D
and didn't make it to the tent with the overhead unit. I'm really glad you took the pictures and posted them
on your site. I think I've decided to get one also. I tried to call them today but they hadn't made it back from
 Sun-N-Fun yet.

I've really been wondering how I could make that area look more finished and I think this unit fits the bill. Do
you think there will be any problem with loss of head room? It didn't look like it was coming down very far?

A long time ago, now, after riding in back of Van's demo -10 (son in front),
I posted on this site that when we hit a light bump or two I noticed a
wiggle. At that time there weren't any other -10's flying and my email went
nowhere. However, I made a note that if I could afford a yaw dampener, I'd
get one. Given that one is going to have inexperienced light plane riders
in the back, and I've had one too many lose their cookies in the back of a
182, I suggest seriously thinking about adding one if at all possible. Not
sure about losing functionality in the autopilot, but those implications
need more time to sink into the gray matter.

Remember, us folks who fly regularly have our sea legs. Those poor folks
who sit in the back probably do not have theirs.

I do not think you will loose any head room, since it is maybe 12" wider than the tunnel. Head room is never an issue for me. Short at 5'-9"

I do have a few other observations that I just remembered.

There has been questions periodically about where to locate the rudder pedals. Tim has his in the forward hole, which works for Tim. When I sat in Tim's pilot seat without moving the seat I was not able to reach the pedals and get full rudder deflection. Probably if I moved the seat It would work, but then I would be too close to the panel. The rear position is the right one for me (at) 5'-9".

Tim has the plastic vents installed, he will be replacing them with the metal eye balls. Save yourself the money and put in the more expensive metal ones.

One of Vic's COM antennas in on the top. He says it give great performance. Both on my COMs are on the bottom, with doublers and holes already installed. Thats where mine will stay unless there is a problem.

I sealed mine with a "P" shaped rubber gasket seal from a hardware
store, with stick-on backing. I haven't had it in rain or
washed it, but I'd be surprised if it leaked much...it's sealed
pretty good. I did have to buy 2 separate thicknesses since the
levels weren't consistent between some of the horizontal and
vertical areas around the door.

I also wonder about moisture.

The overhead does look great however.

About the yaw Damper, about six weeks ago myself and another -10 builder went up to tru trak and got a flight in theirs. They have the rv10  autpilot in it and the weather was bumpy to say the least and we certainly could tell the difference when the yaw was turned on and not turned on. It was not so bad in the front but my partner said he  could reallly tell the difference. We both decided at that point we would get it.
 That's my .02.

need more time to sink into the gray matter.

Remember, us folks who fly regularly have our sea legs. Those poor folks
who sit in the back probably do not have theirs.

They have the rv10  autpilot in it and the weather was bumpy to say the least and we certainly could tell the difference when the yaw was turned on and not turned on. It was not so bad in the front but my partner said he  could reallly tell the difference. We both decided at that point we would get it.

I posted on this site that when we hit a light bump or two I noticed a

nowhere. However, I made a note that if I could afford a yaw dampener, I'd
get one. Given that one is going to have inexperienced light plane riders
in the back, and I've had one too many lose their cookies in the back of a

The wiggle is only when it is windy.  Other than that it is smooth.  Randy

Randy, Jesse, Tim, others flying, thoughts about your back seaters’ experiences?

Sorry TDT you're correct...they do not have it on the web site as of last week, and other than a pix they did not have a data sheet, that I was aware of, so the fellow said that it would not intercept the final approach course...I was assuming he meant an ILS and not a GPS/WAAS approach...but I'm not really sure that is correct.

Hopefully they will have it on the site soon.
