Yep, that is visible Carbon Monoxide. Their oil cooler is a big contributor
to that since the stacks are so close to it.

You people are simply crazy to sit and breath that 100% of the time your flying.  There is no way to keep it out of the cockpit and its the same old BS, "what you can't see won't hurt you." Where there's smoke there's death!

Oh wonderful One of Socialist State of Mexifornia!

I ran fresh air from back side of air compressor air cooling horn into cockpit where I plug in my MBU-5 oxygen mask for nice cool fresh air from front of aircraft. Used 1" Scat hose. Put brass filter screen where I placed hose onto horn with little 1" flange thingy so I eat no bugs in process. Replace mask mike with mike off David Clark, plugs right in. Its works perfectly, and the funny thing is when I take off the mask in flight for a candy break I can easily smell the odors surrounding me.  Brass screen is a must to cut down on air pressure to mask, now it works just like a pressure oxygen mask.

I tried everything else, sealing up all the nooks and cracks, sealing up around the oil cooler, everything, still smoke system smoke in the cockpit! Theres just no way to stop it coming in, or at least none I can figure out. Then if the canopy is cracked open, even more!

Easy with the mask program. No applause, just send money.

Bundinni,

I have abandoned California and now reside in Utah. Still commuting to SoCal for work, but I have no intention of ever returning to that wretched state, or State for that matter (no offense to my family and friends who live there, of course!).

Thanks for the info. The mask idea is a good one and I'm in the process of putting that into play in my plane as we speak, along with forced air via a naca scoop. The other way that we have found to be effective in reducing the CO in the cockpit is to louver 4 access panels on the plane. The panel on the belly where the 2nd snot valve is (when was the last time you cleared that, folks?), the left side bottle drain access panel just aft of the trailing edge of the wing, and the two access panels on the tail.

We have fabricated the dyes and if anyone wants this done you can send your panels and we'll turn them around in a week. We tried outsourcing this with several shops and they couldn't make their dyes work without cracking the soft material, so we tooled up to do them in house.

This addition alone makes a big difference, as Craig Payne's article in Red Alert sometime back demonstrated. Look at that video again, gang. Every one of us is breathing CO ALL THE TIME, the smoke just colors what we don't otherwise see.

Barry

Barry,
You are dead on. It is present from engine start to shut down. Just a little
higher at different times. But in any case you are breathing in a
significant amount over an 8 hour period if you do 3 turns on a Saturday.
The MBU-12 mask can be purchased from Barnes and Gibson for one if you do
not have an old helmet/mask combination from earlier.

Barry,

Good to hear you got smart! I got so sick of So Cal I moved as well! Next move is Nevada I believe.

I found we had to restrict the inflow air to the mask or the pressure would blow your damn cheeks up!

Yea everyone is flying around on CO in a CJ or Yak, same old problem, silent invisible killer. Not to mention any long term effects or degradation in your judgment or flying skills.

Whats a snot valve? Smile

Happy flying!
