The motor has sat for awhile; okay a long while. It was suppose to have had bearings and piston rings replaced but everything else was within spec. I noticed when I hand propped the engine just for oil purging that I had a little drag at one point but could not figure it out. Now two engines run later with the first for a very short time to check everything and then a run for 10 minutes. Today I almost could not turn the prop by hand because of an intake valve was stuck or it just would hardly move. I removed the air intake to the offending valve and sprayed everything in my garage to loosen it up. Finally it works some what free. Any thoughts?

How many hours on the engine and do you use 100LL? If it sat a real long time and oil purge would be a really good idea.

Roger,
I have no idea how many hours are on this engine. That is why I believe the guy I picked the motor up from had the lower end checked and replaced the bearings and put in new piston rings. He claims he did not touch the valves because the appeared okay. I didn't know about the part of not doing the valves until recently. And yes, I would say it has burned 100LL a good portion of its life. I had sitting in my garage for at least 1 year and yes I did purge the oil system. During hand prop to purge the system is when I first heard the faint popping and a little resistance. It was after two run-ups and then two days of sitting that I went to rotate the prop that I found it very difficult to rotate. I should note I checked valve clearance after the second warm up and nothing seemed wrong with offending intake valve. As I said I sprayed some LPS directly to the valve stem through the removed intake pipe and it helped it free it up but still not perfect. What do you think? Major or put a little lube in the gas for a while.

Some of these 914's have been military surplus. It is what is used in the Predator aircraft. If I bought a used 914 it would help to get a history on the engine.
If it has had a long life of 100LL then it probably needs a valve job and have the seats reamed. You can not do a valve job like a car. The valves are armored. (too hard). Valves need replacement, the seats can be re-worked.
Have you done a compression test. This may tell a more complete story. Do a compression test first thing and at operating temps.
All this said this can be hard to diagnose over email.

Roger,
I pulled the head last night because the valve was still sticking. I will take valves apart later. Thank!
