Where's the best place to put an access hatch on the bottom of a 601XL? I've looked at putting it behind the step frame, but there's only about 9 inches before you get to an L stiffener. I've looked at putting it behind the rear spar, but there's only about 10 inches, and I worry about weakening the skin near the spar. If I put behind the L stiffener rear of the step frame, I could put a nice size access hatch there but it'd be a long way from things that might need maintenance or inspection. What have others done?

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> General consensus says put it where you can reach whatever may need attention (turnbuckles, etc.) Make sure you add reinforcement around the hatch opening, and you should be all right. A 1/4 to 1/2 inch turnup on the edges of the reinforcement will give you plenty of rigidity. I've seen "trapdoors" big enough to crawl through (maybe they were intended as bomb bay doors.)

Zenith have an option Access door plan 6-ADO-1 which shows where to put it.

965 to 1535 back from front end of 6B1-4 door 560L X 500W

L angles at 1135 go to sides of hatch only
Plan calls for frame cutout with Z angles
replace L at 1535 with Z
cut L at 1135
Add Z angle at 985 (riveted with 6G3-5) add Z along sides..

Call Zenith if need more info or that page..
Chris

Chris,
Thanks for the information. Could you tell me what the fasterner spacing is on 6-ADO-1?

Chris a subsidiary question. My copy of 6-ATO-1 shows the door as a flat
panel, but some of the photos I've seem indicates diagonal folds in the
door (presumably to reduce drumming) I would appreciate clarification.

Malcolm,

You are correct that the bottom hatch ZAC delivers is domed by the addition of folds going out to the corners. I have found that it does not do much for oil-canning. I put some additional L-angle stiffeners down it and it helped tremendously.

FYI... When I installed it I did away with the hinge at the front. It looked to me that it would just be in the way when you had to actually work in there.

David

Thanks for this. I have made the bottom door and it works very well so I
don't feel like putting it in the bending brake again and risking the fit!
I had thought about stiffening angles so I will go down that road.

Thanks also to Gary and Gig, all contributions are very welcome this side of
the pond.
