Not exactly aviation related but....there must be somebody on this list who has experience and is knowledgeable.......will appreciate any input.
I need help selecting/purchasing a wet suit for kite boarding. This would be for cool weather days on the sea coast and cold water lakes (like Lake Michigan)
Are there different fabrics/materials used to make wet suits?...if so what should I be considering? What weight material would I need/want?
Should I purchase a one piece suit or top and bottom?
Any other considerations I should be thinking about?
My plan is to fly my RV-6A to the hot spots for kite boarding...day trips and maybe some overnights. Anybody else have an interest?

Dude, my muscles are sore just thinking about this! Might be game though! I also have a 10' surfboard if I could just get it in my RV. www.ronjonsurfshop.com for some serious wet suit resource advice.

Wholly cow Dale what a hobby, I used to race sail boards but this trumps
That by a mile. I suggest a full 1/8" suit by o'neil as you tend to get
Wet more often

Dale,
I actually built the extended baggage compartment in my -7A with a kite board in mind! Of course I haven't managed to buy the kiteboard gear yet. I do have a trainer kite... does that count?
The Henderson Hyperstretch suits fit really well and have great mobility. They are much better than the standard neoprene suits. These were designed for diving, but I don't see any reason they shouldn't work. You would probably want to make sure they have reinforced knee's and elbow's. Other companies might also have similar technology now since it's been out for a while.
I would go with a 3mm full suit for cool spring and fall days. You'll be exerting yourself and be in/out of the water, so a thicker suit would probably be too hot and more restrictive. I have a 3mm shorty and a 3mm full that I use for diving. They work fine for days >65F air temp and 60F-80F water temp. Much colder and I would need more, but diving I'm submerged for extended times which pulls the heat out faster.
Just my $0.02. Hope it helps some. Maybe one day I'll be out there with you!

Once upon a time I did a LOT of scuba diving and decided to spring for a dry suit. It was the best diving investment I ever made (other than my pony bottle). Simple to put on, comfortable to move in and no body prune effect after hours in the water. On a deep dive I would put on a sweat shirt under the suit. At the time they were rather expensive and I have no idea where the technology is but maybe it’s worth a look to see what dry suits have to offer these days in terms of price and comfort.

Dale:
I've been thinking of trying kiteboarding but have still have not gotten
around to it. Kitty Hawk kites said they would pick me up in Manteo if I
flew in there.
Though I hate to put a damper on things, I should point out that this is
Winter. Might snow skiiing might be better activity? There are a number
of fly-in resorts in W.Va. A trip might be in order? Obviously, we need
VFR conditions. Dont want to mess with ice.

Thanks for the responses on my wet suit questions. I surmised that you'll
would be a good resource. Gives me a much better idea where to start.

I got into the sport last summer when I purchased the kite, board and
harness. Now, my wife wants to buy me a wet suit for Christmas to extend
the kite boarding season in spring and fall.
But, we also snow ski. I am all for an RV excursion to a ski area.
What/where are the better fly-in resorts in WV that have skiing?
Wish the Greenbriar Valley Airport in Lewisburg WV was closer to Snow Shoe.

Dale,
I have 3 suits hanging in my garage I use for riding a stand-up jet ski on Lake Norman. First is a lightweight shorty good for the first of the cool season with water temps dropping into the low 70's. Next is a full one piece suit made of a very flexible material with taped and sealed seams. It lets me ride with water temps down into the mid 50's. For colder than that, I use a dry suit. What you'll need will depend on the water temps you're most likely to encounter. Wet suits come in many different thicknesses and quality of materials. For scuba diving I wore the thicker materials to keep warm because they were cheaper and I didn't need a lot of movement. For action sports, a thinner material with waterproof seams made of one of the ultra flexible materials will keep you just as warm if not warmer without wearing you out trying to move. They are more expensive, but well worth the extra money.
Proper fit is also very important. I tried on several before finding one that fit me well. With the proper fit and the taped (waterproof) seams, water stays completely out of my suit unless I'm sitting in the water. For quick excursions in and out the water doing tricks, I stay very dry and warm. Bottom line; determine the most likely water temps you will encounter and purchase the thinnest, most flexible suit your budget will allow covering that temperature range. Since you mentioned Lake Michigan, a flexable full one piece with sealed seams is likely the best place to start.
