Yes it's that time again, the Heartland of Winter. No gloating about fine Florida weather this year, it has been cold for a week, from freezing in the morning to mid 50's during the day. Today will be "warm" with temps in the low 60's.
So what do yo Yankee's do to keep the cockpit warm, especially the rear? I fly other airplanes that have better heat than mine. Our hangers are not heated down here but I still have to shovel deep piles of sunshine away from the hanger door

Secunt..Don't fly airplanes with back seats so u don't have to wurry about tha cold in tha trunk.
Third...Tha YAK-50 is a very woarm airplane in tha winter cause of the oil cooler bein' right under the chin an it vents nicely into the cockpit.

Gotta man-up,Craig!
You can also weather strip the canopy and cover the holes in the floor
at the base of the back seat, but it'll still be drafty.
My wife refuses to fly with me after October even here in temperate
San Francisco. Now imagine what it's like for our brethen in the
northern states, or for that matter, an instructor pilot in China.
I've never fathomed why the Chinese failed to heat the airplane. Did
anybody ask Bushi when he was here? ...Blitz

Went flying with six RV guys the other day as my plane continues to be in the shop getting repairs done to it. Ground temps here in NC were in the low 30s at 5000 feet where we were flying, it was in the teens. However, it was a cloudless day. Of the six, I flew in the only plane with heat - an RV-7! However, with their small cockpits and the greenhouse effect, it was not too bad and we didn't turn the heat on. Of course, those planes are not drafty either!
Temps like this are unusual here as we have normal mid-day temps in the 50s during Jan. What we all discussed was wearing heated clothing. One guy is buying the clothing that can plug into a cigarette lighter. Draws several amps though so gotta make sure the wiring and CBs are planned properly.
Here is a link to battery powered clothing which I think is a great option.

Hey Craig,
I bet you guys are wishing you had some extra pairs of long under-ware and
thicker coats now. Maybe a set of those heated insole liners, gloves and
vest to tide you through this Arctic Blast. Did I see 19 for tonight in
Ocala? Without those heated long johns that CJ is gonna get pretty darned
cold.
Flew yesterday in a balmy 33 deg. Even my Swedish Air Force Air War College
exchange pilot (pax) found it to be "a little bit" chilly but 50 min of acro
in the 52 will keep ya warm anytime. Lars went home with a big smile on his
face at the end of the sortie. He was a Viggin Squadron Commander before
coming to AWC. Glad even in the cold to be able to make his day. Nine months
with no air under your ass gets to be a long dry spell.
The first comment he made when he walked into the hanger for the EAA
meeting, "why so many Russian Aircraft?" My comment..." the free world won
the cold war these were the spoils of war."
"Communism, lousy politics...great airplanes." Drew Blahnick
