Another possible source for netting, and other items not easily sewed on the typical home Singer,
(especially by the typical rivet puller) is your local "trucker's supply".

In most areas dump trucks, rock haulers, gravel haulers, etc, are required to put netting over their loads.

Usually some guy has a big industrial sewing machine and a selection of netting, some very long work tables (leveled) and giant sissors. These firms make nets-to-order.

Also, consider awning merchants. They cut & sew canvas, belting material, etc, and likely have the expertise to custom-fit your idea.

Be cautious about mentioning the word "airplane" as the price usually goes up.

Regards.

Zed

Get a net shuttle and make your own! I've made several for my boat.
Very easy to do.

My wife informs me the correct term is "netting shuttles".

Here's one source:
http://halcyonyarn.com/weaving_shuttles.html

Here's one page I happened across:
http://www.lafishmag.com/nets.html

Hope this helps.

Hi all,

Strictly a 1/2 educated guess.---could be the tool that fishermen use
to repair holes in gill nets-

Isn't it the device where one spools the yarn used for making the net?
If it is, it probably received that name because it gets thrown form one side to another during the process.

I presume what you are interesting in doing in making a net, IIRC, netting is the correct verb.

I used to have a book on how to net, and many years ago I made a few small nets. They make great shopping bags.

The net shuttle is just a handy device to hold a nice quantity of string (or whatever you are making the net from) while you maneuver the string and tie the knots to make up the net.

I made some shuttles out of plastic (like the sides of an empty antifreeze jug) similar to the ones shown in Carlos' link. The plastic wasn't stiff enough and they didn't work very well. I had better luck making them out of coat hanger wire, something like the attached dwg. Size is somewhat arbitrary, depending on the thickness of the string and the size of the mesh and the net dimensions.
