Don't forget to get your new pilot certificate before the end of March! Your paper certificate will expire and as I understand it, if you want to fly after that, you will have to take all the tests over for each rating you have.
Scary!

My interpretation is that the "Paper Certificate" expires and that doesn't mean your
ratings expire. In order to exercise your certification privileges you must be in
possession of a valid certificate. I didn't find anything saying one would lose your
ratings if you didn't get the new certificate by March 31.
If you follow their instructions for reissuing your certificate without you SSI
number, it is free. Otherwise they charge you $2 for a replacement. They immediately
e-mailed my verification and said I would receive the new certificate within two
weeks.
What I found interesting is that they do not require having a current medical to issue
the replacement certificate.

The problem ... is that we have run out of dinosaurs to form oil with.
Scientists working for the Department of Energy have tried to form oil using
other animals; they've piled thousands of tons of sand and Middle Eastern
countries on top of cows, raccoons, haddock, laboratory rats, etc., but so
far all they have managed to do is run up an enormous bulldozer-rental bill
and anger a lot of Middle Eastern persons. None of the animals turned into
oil, although most of the laboratory rats developed cancer.

You should not use your fireplace, because scientists now believe that,
contrary to popular opinion, fireplaces actually remove heat from houses.
Really, that's what scientists believe. In fact many scientists actually
use their fireplaces to cool their houses in the summer. If you visit a
scientist's house on a sultry August day, you'll find a cheerful fire
roaring on the hearth and the scientist sitting nearby, remarking on how
cool he is and drinking heavily.

I had a lady from the FAA stop me at the airport earlier this fall and told me the same thing. She said she was going around and telling everyone she could find at the airports because as she understood it, come March or April if you don't have the new certificate, you will have to go back for check rides etc, and the 10s of thousands of hours you may have already is null and void.
I applied for mine and changed the number.. free and got it within a few weeks!

One would think that not all pilots are on the net and maybe don't fly
often, ie flying farmers or those who have taken a few years off. If not
for the internet I wouldn't have known nothing about it and, like Paul, I
couldn't find anything on the FAA site that addresses losing one's ticket
for failure to make the change on time. I suspect that the FAA would have a
fire storm of protest if suddenly thousands of people had to get recertified
just because they were late. Personally, I suspect that the rumors are
bogus and a lot of anecdotal BS is floating around out there.
Then again, just in case... I sent mine off today.

Deke,
A lot of fiction is floating around surrounding this topic. I thought it best to go to the source. I have a call in to FAA Headquarters and I hope to have the facts soon. When I get them I'll be sure to post it for everyone.

Being active on FAA website and safety notices, I'm also surprised to hear
this. I searched the FAA website and did find the notice, somewhat buried,
looks like the ball got dropped on this one.
What about the EAA? Nothing from them either.....

I find it hard to believe too, but it was someone who works for the FAA that told me that.
I was also told not to throw away the paper cert because all the documentation refers back to it.

Guys/Gals,
This information is from the AOPA:
Plastic certificates
On February 28 2008, the FAA released its final rule requiring pilots and airmen to switch from their paper pilot certificates to the new counterfeit resistant plastic certificate. Pilots have until March 31, 2010, and all other airmen have until March 31, 2013, to convert their certificates in order to continue to exercise their privileges. After the 2010 and 2013 deadlines, pilots and airman who have not converted will have to request and receive a new plastic certificates before exercising their privileges

There is no mention of retesting or flight checks, you won't be able to exercise the privileges of the certificates if they are not of the plastic variety. Only plastic certificates will be legal and you must have them in your possession.
I'm still waiting for more information direct from the FAA, but this is pretty clear.

was just what the bi.. uh.. lady with the FAA stickers on her car told me. I asked her specifically.. however, that was months ago so at that time she was just getting the word out about what was coming down the line.. the final rule must have been different from what was originally kicked around..
