A friends Yak-52 is having problems with the mags.  He had a 5-7% RPM drop and had the mags overhauled.  They check out fine on the ground during initial runup.  After operating for some time, when a mag check is done, the engine nearly dies on each mag.  So, when both mags, all is good, when one mag (either L or R) the engine nearly dies.  



Any thoughts?

Who were the maqs overhauled by?  I once sent out my mags for overhaul.  The coils were sent to Savage Magneto, who in turn sent them to their "coil guy".  The coil guy decided that the Russians didn't know anything about coils, so he modified them.  Less windings and added a capacitor.  One lasted 30 minutes.  The second one lasted 4 hours.  I sent them to Carl Hays.  They have been fine ever since (some 500 hours now, I think).

Just out of curiosity, does this engine have automotive spark plugs, and

if so, what is the gap on them?  



Cutting to the chase, it is shot-gun long shot not based on enough

evidence, but if these are auto plugs, you might want to replace them

and make sure the GAP is not set to around .035 or so.  I think Dennis

recommends around .020, or something like that. (ASK HIM!)  But I do

know that if your plug gap is set too wide, you will have the mag drops

that you mentioned AND the engine can be hard to start, as well as

running a lot differently once it has warmed up.  That happened to me,

and it took darn close to 6 months to figure it out.  



Failing that, I would recommend making darn sure that the mags are

installed and timed properly which is no easy task.   By "timed", I mean

not only with a buzz box, but also that the rotors have been set

properly, which is often overlooked.  Again, talk to Dennis or George

Coy.

Correct on the gap Mark.  Actually I "suggest" around  .021 or .022.  But .020 is close enough for government work.

NOT automotive plugs.  I was thinking there may be a coil issue where internal resistance goes up as they heat.

The coil issue with these mags is typically caused by the  internal capacitor breaking down, not the coil itself.

The capacitor is inside the coil.  I should have made  that a little more clear.

Sorry, I do not.  Check with Jill.  I think M14P,  Inc has come up with an external capacitor.  But I'm not 100%  certain.
