Avid Heavy Hauler Jabiru 2200 Question

List,

There is an Avid 2005 cert'd Heavy Hauler on Barnstormers. The engine is a Jab 2200 of unknown S/N and S/B compliance w/ 125 hours. The cruise at 4GPH is only 65 MPH, looks like a 2 blade warp drive prop.

This seems a good 10 MPH slow and no where near the cruise step.

The inlets look like the smaller un modded size, though basic question about Oil Temp and CHT got a "no problems" response.

At 16K it seems like a good deal- has a panel radio, Narco Trans/Mode C, etc- I know at 6'1 and 230# I'm a tight squeeze- I just fit in a Kitfox IV w/ some stick/leg bumping, but the sig. other is a tiny 5'4 and 115#.

I've read all the Jabiru S/Bs, the AD note, etc. It has a Bing Carb, but don't know if it's 32 or 40MM- the Rotec TBI looks like the thing to swap to down the road. I don't mind a new prop test phase if there is a better one out there- would like to goto ELSA, so would like to keep it fixed pitch.

Don't want to spend 6 grand and have to tear down the motor to update it, but I'd take the courses to do the maint. on it as a LSA.

Suggestions, hints, gotchas?

Thanks in advance

See:
http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/NNum_Results.aspx?NNumbertxt=N820E

Gotcha #1:
N820E is certificated as Experimental Amateur Built so it can never be
changed to ELSA, and since you are not the builder you cannot get a
Repairman's Certificate. You can of course take the 16 hour course but
cannot get the certificate, you can do your own maintenance but not sign off
on changes and inspections, just like any non-builder EAB.

Gotcha #2:
The Airworthiness Certificate, according the above link, lists the engine
manufacturere as Rotax, which possibly means that the change to the Jabiru
engine was not done properly, at least in terms of FAA paperwork and
possibly inspections. There is a link on that page where you can request
further paperwork that might list the engine change, I'd highly recommend
paying the $$ to get it.

Possible gotch #3 - what are those anti-aircraft pods hanging off the
struts!? (joking, sort of)

I would never plunk down money on an aircraft without carefully reviewing
the logbooks and seeing the plane itself. Log books should answer Gotcha #2
and 3.

Other than that - looks like a sweet airplane!
Good luck

Bob,
Gotcha # 1 is not totally correct. I am not the builder of my Experimental
Amateur Built aircraft, but I CAN do all the maintenance AND sign off Annual
Condition Inspections and changes because I hold Mechanic Certificate with
Airframe and Powerplant Ratings.

Yes of course John, and A&P can do the maintenance and sign off inspections
on any aircraft he/she is licensed for, including his own.

I was actually answering the original poster's point "but I'd take the
courses to do the maint. on it as a LSA.". The 16 hour ELSA course would not
qualify him to sign off the inspections on that aircraft even if he owned
it, and would be little help in learning maintenance since the course is all
about inspection, not repair. He can of course fly it as an LSA (as a Sport
Pilot for instance) if it meets the LSA criteria, which most Avids do, but
it will always be an Experimental Amateur Built aircraft.

An internet aquaintence of mine asked me to look at the add for this plane as I've had 3 Avids and one of them has a Jabiru engine.  Later on he went and looked at the plane himself.  He then called me and we talked about what he saw.  Plane has an early model Jabiru engine with the small cooling fins on the heads C but supposedly has no cooling problems.  Jabiru did go to larger fins for a reason.  (Must be the 32 MM carb also)  performance and climb was not very good according to the owner.  Wing tanks leak C that is why it has the external tanks mounted on the wings.    The buyer sent me some pics of the plane C and told me it was kind of ragged.  The pics looked like it also.   As far as headroom in an Avid verses a KItfox 4 C the Kitfox 4 has 2" more headroom.  I have a Kitfox 4 kit and have measured it and the Avid side by side.  Width is the same +or- 1/4".  Price at $16000 is low at first glance C but I think it may seem high after all the details come to light.  Take care C  Jim Chuk  Avids  Kitfox 4   Mn

List, Thanks! I misunderstood the non conversion of EAB to ELSA- thanks! Also, thanks for the direct intel on the aircraft in question- I really appreciate it. Also, the use of 2 blade Warp Drive prop is not allowed in Australia due to a hub cracking issue.

Will have to pass, thanks again!

I'm on the way to my A&P, all my buds are IAs, guess I'll keep after it!
