Hey All,

The upgrade kit instructions specifically warn against using a drill bit on the spar connection bolt holes but to ream to final size. Good idea probably for all the bolt holes. The question I have (since I'm fractionally challenged) is what reamer size and what type of reamer? Should I get the fractional, the lettered or the numbered reamers? Does it matter? What type should I get? etc. etc. etc. etc. Any advice is greatly appreciated including where is the best place to order and the specific sizes for the AN3, AN4 and AN5 holes.

Thanks in advance!!

Bill Pagan

You can order whatever size of reamer you need from MSC industrial. 5/16 is .312 your bolts probably measure somewhere around .309 If you ream to .309 they will be way to tight and you will have to hammer them in. I would think that .312 will work fine as you are only talking .003 bigger in dia. to get a idea of what .003 looks like just pull a hair off your head as they are around .0035 in dia. Your reamer should have straight flutes and use  lots of lube and run at a painfully slow RPM. I would run around 75 rpm max. The slower you run any drill or reamer the tighter the hole is due to less wobble.

I absolutely would not just buy a reamer the size you think you need or the size the bolt calls for. You need to measure the pre existing hole in the spar and use that size reamer. If you take it for granted the hole that is there is the proper size and it is bigger you have just reamed the new doublers smaller than the spar cap holes and guess what you have just done? I will be using oversized NAS bolts and will use the proper size reamer to ream for final size. I don't want all the stress only being taken up by the new doublers and the cap holes being sloppy.

Just my 2 cents

Hey Jeff

That sounds like a totally logical and sensible idea.

With the centre spar out of the aircraft it would seem easy to join the centre spar to the wing spar with the old 5/16 bolts then "match"ream each hole to final size (3/8")

Do you know what oversized NAS bolt are required? I find the nomeculature of NAS bolts impossible to understand!!
