Along with the new carb video, the site now wants everyone to re-register
and push us to subscribe for $50/yr for access to documents and videos.

Personally, I think plunking down $15 - 25,000 for an engine which
has statutory maintenance requirements should entitle buyers to free
tech support.

Fie on Rotax for nickel and diming its customers!

They must've got that idea from Dell Computers.

Pushing Rotax owners to subscribe for a fee to access documents is a very
bad move on their part. It is to their advantage to get directives out to
cutomers to avoid liability. I guess they did not learn their lesson by
their legal battles during the past few years. I had always felt Rotax
dissemination of issues was scanty at best. This is one reason why I sold
my aircraft last year to get out from under Rotax lousy support. I
purchased a new LSA airplane and opted to have a Jabiru engine. When there
is an issue I get the SD mained to me and giving me good hard documentation.
I am spoiled now with good support and dont have to pay a "fee" to access
this support.

It's time to make yourself heard. I for one and my customers are fed-up with the Rotax Gold Standard. This move of charging $50.00 per registered member, and they boast a 32,000 membership, makes them and instant $1,600,000.00 dollars for what was a free service. It sure doesn't cost them $1,600,000.00 to manage a web site and make a few videos.

If your as upset as I am tell them at: info(at)rotax-owner.com

Rick

As a counterpoint. Beechcraft wants $175 whether you take their time
for 1 minute or 59.9 minutes. They are trying to stay financially
viable in challenging times.

Hope your wish comes true. I am worried most manufacturers are going to
declare Tech Support a "Profit Center".

Anyone who owns a Beech is implicitly asking to be overcharged.

This is the Rotax forum. Rotax owners are supposed to be Cost-Efficient!

Squeezing loyal customers by changing the rules after they commit will
loose more money than they will realize from this scheme. Not to mention
the hard feelings.

Hi Guys,

I'm not sure where the $50 comes in? When I registered a few days back it was $19.95. I just looked again and that is what it wanted to charge me for a 1 year subscription. Maybe I missed something? You can register for free and still get your SB's, just not all the other videos.

50 or 19.95, or 10,000. What's the difference. It is the principle. With
the economy the way it is they should be rolling out the red carpet for us.
Lots of other choices in the competition. As far as i am concerned now,
they lost the game.

Something for nothing is exactly what you pay for it. The comment was
only meant to be an indicator that service is a value and some think it
merits compensation. I agree that $175 is a bit steep. Asking for ones
service for nothing a bit bold.

Good luck with your project.

I don't think $19.95 is unreasonable. This can be easily made up in one DIY "Carb Sync" procedure versus paying someone. I am in Information Technology for a living and I know first hand how expensive this stuff is to purchase and maintain. Personally, the valuable information obtained from Rotax-Owners is worth $19.95 to me.

Hi Roger,

The fee for subscription is $49.95 as it says with a "Special" temporary
price of $19.95.
For everyone up until today, the agreed to deal with tech support,(
which by the way, is only a web site with service documents, not
live person voice support like with Beech!), was it is free to customers.

That means every one who bought an engine did so under those conditions.

Now, without prior notice they want to charge for web site access.

This is unfair and poor business practice.
And of course its another $50 to register to take a course now too, for no added value to the customer.

Really, I have never received any communication on issues from Jabiru. I'm
in the US and my engine was purchased from Jabiru/USA.

I'm not happy about the fees any more than anyone else, but I don't see much of a choice. They are doing like everyone else, including the government, trying to make up differences in the bottom line due to the economy. I'm in the same boat with all of you.
p.s.
I just looked it is still $19.95 until March 31st, 2010

What they are doing is:
* increasing the value of lists like this
* Trying to convince customers to go elsewhere
* Increasing their liability

Then again there is the fact that the only ones interested in that
particular product are either customers or people who want to keep their
product working properly.

Well, I paid my $19.95 and have the videos and other documents downloaded to
my computer. I'll worry about next year later. I've put their info to good
use for free for so long and don't begrudge their small charge.

The Rotax gold standard, as someone put it, has gotten to be too much for many of us. I've owned 6 airplanes with Rotax engines, 3 2-strokers and 3 912 engines.

Last year I bailed out and now fly an airplane with a Jabiru engine and am happy with the switch. I like the 912 just a little better, mostly for the PSRU, but not enough to pay the extra costs.

It has always been my impression that Rotax-owers.com is not Rotax the company, but only Rotax authorized. In other words, I think they are a couple of guys trying to make a few bucks on the side by supplying a service. A service that I need and appreciate. Most of which is still free.

ROAN is run by the folks at Rotech in Vernon, BC. They do a great job of
educating Rotax owners.
