Has anyone installed a Dynon autopilot on a 601XL?

Karl,

I installed both the pitch and roll axis Dynon AP in my 601XL. Not too hard to install. Use the Trutrak installation guides from their website for the physical installation. The servo size and bolt hole locations are identical. Here are a few pictures of my installation.

Flying an AP with a light wing loaded airplane can be a little frustrating. Since the 601XL can gain and lose 40 feet so quickly on days with moderate or even light turbulence, it seems like you are on a roller coaster as the AP tries to correct. I usually just turn the pitch off on days like these and hand fly the pitch. I still want to play with the settings this year to see if I can de-tune it more for a steadier ride. Roll control works great. I have the hingless ailerons and highly recommend the SV42 servo as the SV32 was too weak.

Good luck.

Dave,

Question for you.

Are you installing the aileron stop part of the XL mod kit -- the one next
to where the autopilot servos are installed? If so, did you just cut out
part of 6ZU-4-2 to accommodate the aileron servo motor?

Karl,

The new aileron stop in the upgrade kit sure does pose a problem here. I am not quite to that point in the upgrade yet, but I am not sold on the idea of a second stop in the control system anyway and will probably not install it even if it did not interfere.
