I am about to close up one of my wings but have not purchased the nav/strobe lights yet. I need to free up some clecoes to finish up the other wing. Could someone tell me how many wires need to be run and the wire size needed. My plan is to locate the flash units at the wing tip.

Bryan,

I used M27500-18TG3T14 (shielded 18AWG - 3 conductors).

Bryan,

I just found this while doing a web search:
Aeroflash 073-0185 Cable Assembly (15 ft)

The most important thing to remember about powering your strobes is to run an independant ground wire back to either your ground buss or the battery. This will elimnate most of the electrical noise from the strobes. Do not rely on the airframe as your ground (return) line.

On my installation I ran a red for the Nav lights, Yellow for the strobes, and a black for the ground. All 18 Ga.

Another option, since you haven't purchased your lighting yet, is the LED based ones that Zenith is recomending now. Since these are LED based, they do not have the high voltage Xenon strobe power supply that creates all of the electrical noise.

Thanks for the replies. I will go ahead and run 3 wires per wing, probably 16ga just to make certain I have big enough wire in the event that I go with the xenon strobe. But I'm leaning towards using the 3-in-1 Nav/Strobe AeroLED system, even though the price is more than double. Having a low current draw appeals to me. Most likely I'll go with the AeroLED landing light as well.

Bryane, 16Ga should work but before you use that heavy of a wire, you might want to check the AC-43-13. There is a wiring chart there that showes current carrying capability over distance. I think you'll find that 18 Ga is lots to power the aeroflash strobe packs but at least if you check the chart, you will know for sure.

I agree with Doug that 18 gauge is plenty. You might consider running a 4th wire as a future spare. You can strip it out or not before closing the wing. I left one in for future use as a snake for new or replacement wires....Geoff
