KF builders, help me with some advice on engines. I am building my second Fox, a model 4 1200. I want about 100 horsepower to lift amphib floats. Do not want to pay for Rotax 914 or Rotec 2800. Don’t want the weight of Rotec or Jab 3300. I have seen ads for the Verner VM 133 which looks like a sweet engine with really low gas consumption. Also the UL 4 cylinder boxer made in Belgium (air cooled, fadec, injected) almost same cost of a 912 but looks like a better, simpler, more modern engine. I also like what I have heard about the Raven 1300 setup for the 4 cyl Geo-Suzuki. Anyone have any knowledge/comments on these engines. Yeah, I know, I should get a loan and hang a Rotec on it and I would if didn’t have a wife!

Ed,
I too am very impressed with the UL engine. I saw it at Sebring and Lakeland . It is a very nice design, light.modern and produces significant horsepower. I don't think there are that many in the US. Why don't you buy one, install it, and give us a report.

Ed, I don't get it? When I got involved with airplanes my wife said, "Don't you think we should be a 2 income family to afford those airplanes?" I told her that her job already took alot of her time. I don't know how she could handle a part time job too. But if she wanted to try, go ahead. So she did. I couldn't handle it without her.

Hi Ed,
Engine choice, tough decision. It reminds me of a recent conversation with a
neighbor who is a project manager with Aerojet - yes, a real rocket
scientist. The way he tells it, a customer gives a set of specifications -
you have mentioned yours - and a design team is assigned to come up with
something that will work. Then after this work is completed, they convene a
large meeting with engineers not associated with the design and they have at
it. Comments can become personal. "That's the stupidest thing I have ever
seen, and you call yourself an engineer", to quote him as an often heard
comment. The purpose of the meeting, of course is to discover weakness in
the design before the expensive prototype is actually constructed. I suspect
you have begun the show me what's wrong with my design stage.
I guess my only comment this time around would be why you have not put the
Rotax 912ULS at 100 hp into the mix.

Well Said Lowell.
Rotax will be your number 1 choice for float flying.
Keep it light and under 800 lbs on floats. I have seen IVs that weigh
over 800 lbs on wheels which makes them a heavy pathetic performer.
