WARRENTON, Virginia - Today Sunday March 7, 2010 another homebuilt aircraft took to the skies. Test pilot Bob Garity took Zenair Zodiac N601T up for its first flight. This CH601-HD two-seat aircraft was built by local pilot and builder Jeff Davidson. Mr. Davidson headed up a ground crew of local pilots. The ground crew was ready on foot, bicycle, and motorized vehicles. Mr. Garity reported that all systems worked well and that the plane flew with no bad characteristics. The only squawk concerned the volume of the communications radio during transmissions. A previous attempt occurred on Friday March 5th. That attempt ended with a dead battery. Charged up and pre-heated today the plane started easily. Pilot Garity indicated that starting the engine with the throttle at idle helped start it easily. With this technique, the engine started in just 2-3 blades. Once airborne several touch and goes were performed. With a busy pattern, at least two go-arounds were performed. Acceleration on take off was reported to be excellent and landings were characterized as easy with no bad characteristics on the ground. The test flight was conducted entirely in the Warrenton (HWY) traffic pattern. Some pictures are attached. Builder Davidson reported that the second flight will follow in short order.

Congratulations! How long did the build take?
--------
Ron Lendon, Clinton Township, MI
Ron,
I chose the Zodiac in 1994 at Oshkosh that year. I attended the
workshop in Mexico, Missouri later that year. I have been working on the
plane since with some periods of inactivity as long as 6 months. Every
skill required was new to me. I attended seminars on electrical, engine,
first flight, LSA maintenance, conducting the first flight, and I have a
stack of the Homebuilt Help videos. The Matronics List with people like
Jeff Small, George Penino (GGP), the two Mikes, Michel Theiren, Jim
Burkholder, Bill Steer, Larry MacFarland, Fred Hulen, Thilo, and a host of
others helped immeasurably. Occasionally I called the factory in Mexico to
talk to Nick or Roger. The EAA online videos came mostly after I had built
everything. I made extensive use of a group of Technical Counselors and a
Flight Advisor. It was an educational experience. In sum, it took me about
15 years total. I had absolutely no experience or knowledge when I started.
My normal job is desk bound.
Details:
CH601-HD with XL canopy, XL firewall, reinforced wing root fairings,
reinforced seat back/baggage shelf, Jabiru 3300A with the FWF package from
JabiruUSA, Dynon EMS and EFIS, Garmin GPS & Transponder, Garmin/Apollo SL40
communications radio, and PS Engineering intercom. The panel was built
using Mark Townsend's methods (linoleum knife). I used Whelan light
fixtures and a Nova Systems strobe power pack. The two axis electric trim
is RC Allen. The seats are conform foam from Oregon Aero covered locally
here in Herndon where I live. I designed a storage box for the console
strong enough to use it to help get in and out. Empty weight is an even 700
pounds unpainted.
