Just wondering if anyone out there is using Kiev prop, and what their thoughts are?

When we first started flying N582EF, the FSII with the 582, we were using a 68" two blade Ivo, E box, 2.6:1 ratio. Friend was building a Hawk Arrow with an HKS and a 3 blade Kiev. Figured that the HKS & the 582 were not too far apart to compare their respective props so borrowed the Kiev and tried it out.
A little noisier, top end about the same, a hair less climb, and at all cruise speeds, needed a bit more rpm. About as smooth as the Ivo.

Worth what you paid for it.

They seem to claim the opposite of what you experienced. They say quieter and better performance.

Tony,

This reply is off-list, because I don't want to get into a pissing match on the Kolb list about who make's the best propeller!!

As you may know, I have the GEO engine on my MkIII.  A member of the list, a guy named Vassili, sells Koolprops, and absolutely swears by them!!   I have NO experience with the Koolprop, except from what his customer's say.

Evidently the Kiev and the Kool props are practically identical, except the Kool uses carbon fiber and fiberglass, whereas the Kiev uses just fiberglass.  Even the prop hub is interchangeable between the Kiev and the Kool.

Like I said, I can't vouch for how good a prop the Kool is, but from what I read, it seems to be very well built and performs excellently.

List,

There I go again!!  That last email was supposed to be off-list to Tony!!  Sorry.

Since I have very little experience with light plane propellers, I didn't want to get into an argument with anyone who about who makes the best prop!!!  I didn't want to have to defend something I don't have much experience with!!   I was simply passing along to Tony what I had read.

The Kiev and the Kool are practically the same props, from what I see.

So, don't kill the messenger.  I'm not an expert on props, so don't feel you have to defend your propeller choice!!

There are 3 running at our field. I run a 68" on my Firestar II w/ 503. I traded in a WD for it. There's one on a MK iii with 912S float plane with over 900 takeoffs. He also has a Highlander w/ 912S with a Kiev.

Warps are very good- the strongest available, but strength isn't everything. The Kiev is lighter but still very strong. Light enough to run a spacer. I believe it's scimitar shape is more efficient than the WD.
Seems a bit quieter too. Comes standard with bronze leading edge. Sexier too. Cost about the same.

I guess you can tell I like 'em.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I just ordered a Kiev prop. I'll let you know what I think and what kind of performance I get with it. It won't be for a while because apparently they are quite booked up. I was told a month before it ships.

Tony,
If you can have things ready for the switch over, you could make a
flight with the old prop, change over to the new prop and repeat the
same flight pattern - if you have a GPS you could fly down a straight
road for some distance and see what effect it has on your cruise
speed and climb rate for each prop. About as close of comparison as
your going to get. Since it is a new prop you might not be able to
do a back to back comparison as you will need to swap the prop,
adjust the pitch, and tweak it in.
