Has anyone had an issue with the fitting of the outboard leading edge ribs into the skin? For example, on page 17-3 figure 1, the outboard w-1009R rib is pictured going into the skin with the flanges facing inboard. Mine is backwards and flanges have to be facing outboard to line the holes up. I checked one of the W-1009L inboard ribs also and it, too, is backwards. I've tried making sure I didn't get the right/left skins switched but that didn't matter. I also checked Tim O's site for gotchas and couldn't find anything mentioned as well as plans revisions on the home site. Nothing mentioned anywhere makes me wonder if I'm not just overlooking something obvious. Any suggestions?

This may not be the problem. But the Ribs are “Numbered” Left and Right based on the direction of the flange and not the wing they are in….if I remember right. So, W-1009L does not necessarily go in the left wing. This is just a memory items for me, but it is something to check……I can’t even remember which wing the drawings are for, but check to make sure you got the correct L/R rib for the correct wing…..

Thinking about it…..the flange direction may not even affect the hole alignment?

The flanges go inboard, IIRC getting all of them lined up involved some form of pressure to properly seat the nose of the rib into the leading edge. I keep remembering muttering to myself your “other” left or right when placing the ribs into the leading edge. If you look on 17-3 where you build the left leading edge, you will see ribs internal are “lefts” and the root and tip ribs are “rights” the left and right refers to the flange direction, not the right or left wing. Hope dat heps.

To clarify my comment on the flange pointing inboard, was only at the tip, not the root or tank side.

You are all correct and to my knowledge I've done everything you mention. The plans are drawn for the left wing. As shown there are five W-1009 -L ribs (two modified for the step bars on the main spar), these are all inboard with flanges facing outboard. The inboard most rib, the W-1008-R splice rib is the inboard most rib with flanges facing inboard. Finally, the outboard most rib is the W-1009-R. I understand they are all "numbered" and L/R. It gets confusing but I think I've got everything how the plans show and they are still backwards in the skin (and it does matter which way the flanges face because the hole spacing toward the front of the ribs are different on the top and bottom).

I hope it's just something I'm doing wrong but I'm using the exact parts listed in the plans (left wing).

Till I figure it out I'll keep trying.

Bill
