Tire shops have used wheel weights that can be melted. It isn't pure lead and has a few % of antimony in it to increase hardness.

I thought that lead could cause corrosion on aluminum?

I don't think lead and aluminum together directly corrode, but contaminants and water could get between the lead and bare aluminum and cause a problem.

What's used to plug the tubing before pouring the molten lead in?

my A&P used a mold made from aluminum. he pluged the end of the mold with clay.after it cooled , he used a file to
make it fit in the tube. He then drilled through the holes in
the tubing and added the weights.. I only gained 21lbs with
the upgrade. the weight a balance was in the center of gravity. I made two flights tuesday and am happy with the results. before ,in a turn, i could see the outer panel of the wing flexing a little bit, but not now. very solid..I feel much
more confident in the airplane now. After 60 years of flying,
you need to feel confident, and now I do.

Thanks. That makes sense. I was thinking you poured the molten lead into the balance tube.

Yes, probably your great grand children will need to repaint the part... If gasoline is still available to fly your airplane

Paul
Do you have any idea how long the led weight was? My calculation
shows that it would need to be about 10 inches long to fit inside the
tubes that Zenith supplied. This puts the CG of the weight closer to the
hinge and thus increases the total amount of weight required slightly.
Not a big deal but if you could find out how about long the led slug was
it would help in doing the same thing again.

the lead in the tube only goes in about 6'.We added a few weights then on the out side. The hole in the rear spar was enlarged just enough to clear the weights on the outside. This is at the end of the wing and does not carry much weight so it is not weakened .In the future if I need to
service the balance or remove the alerion"excuse the spelling" .

Paul,
Given your experience, I think I may increase the length of the led section a little and I may avoid the need for external side weights.
