Hi all,
removed the complete gill system of CJ to replace the "weatherstrip". The vanes were never detached from the center ring, but were removed from the outer ring (to enable riviting for weatherstrip) by removing the nut, and then the long "bolt".
reinstalled today,, and suddenly they are very hard to open and close. The nuts were tightened just enough to prevent up and down movement.
any tips? ideas?
thanks
Mike

It is very important that the outer ring is not warped. The stand offs need to be all the correct length so that the outer ring is not twisted or bowed. What happens is that the inter ring that moves the vanes is working against the outer ring. I just replaced my gills vanes and had this very problem. It turned out that one of the cylinder stand offs, was about 3/8" short. I sighted from the side and could just make out a slight bow in the out ring. Once that was fixed, it work smooth as silk.

Yep, had to replace the 50’s gills after a bird strike. The same thing. Just locked them in the open position and safety wired the inner ring lever. Have not had time to tweak it because of other time consuming issues with my office. Will get back to it this spring. They do not move well when the outer ring is warped.
Even flying in this past cold ass winter once cylinder head temps were up did not need them.

another potential gotcha. I was looking though the parts manual for a hint as to the problem..... 3 of the vanes have shorter bolts than the others... this may be causing its own set of issues as well.
Back to the hangar tear it apart and go from there.
