KFer's, What is the best sealant to use for fittings into worn threads on the plastic header tank. I am using the red hard setting 3M pipe sealant. I also have some black non hardening 3M. But, it is messy as hell to use. My 1st experience with it wasn't successful. I had it all over everything but the threads and it didn't seal. In addition my post script has been Mod 3 582 Rebuild. N942EJ , "Its an airplane again" to quote my test pilot yesterday after 1st flight. Exciting as Hell to see a
2 1/2 year total rebuild project rise from the ashes and take flight, even if someone else is doing the flying.

Good going, Pat. It's nice to be able to change the signature isn't it?
I use Permatex sealer thta comes in a tube....it's a lot stiffer than
the brush-on stuff, and I'm pretty sure the container says "non-
hardening".

Best I've found after lots of trials is 2-part polysulfide sealant:

The best fuel sealant that I’ve found for threaded fittings is Dow 730 Solvent Resistant Sealant. It was specifically designed by Dow for use with fuel and other solvents. It’s been on my airplane for 16 years now. It doesn’t harden, so it doesn’t crack. Also, it really doesn’t have to cure before you let gasoline at it – the fittings are ready to use right away. But it’s not cheap. Sit down for this – it costs $99.50 for a 3-oz tube from Aircraft Spruce. Years ago I convinced Phil to start stocking it. At first he thought I was crazy. Maybe you all will, too. But no fitting has ever leaked with it. A tube will probably do 10 airplanes, which is why I loan it to my friends. We have all had good experience with it. I’ve kept mine in a frig since I bought it and it’s still good.

Mike, Thanks for the recommendation. I put mine back together today with the Permatex non hardening that I already had and that Lynn says he uses. I'll put gas in it tomorrow. If it leaks again, I will bite the bullet and try the stuff you recommend. Did you use it on fittings going into plastic tanks with worn threads?

Pat, I've never used Dow 730 on anything with worn threads. It's not a structural material, so it wouldn't add strength. I suppose it would depend on how worn the threads are. If the fitting doesn't stay put on its own without some kind of goop, I might recommend drilling and tapping to the next larger size. Another possibility is to glue on a fiberglass or aluminum doubler plate drilled and tapped for your fitting. I'd use fiberglass resin for the fiberglass doubler. However, if you decided on an aluminum doubler plate, I'd use 3M structural adhesive. It so happens I've used this structural adhesive to attach aluminum fuel-gauge bosses to fiberglass tanks and it's worked well. Either way, I don't see any reason a doubler plate wouldn't work.

Mike, Thanks for the info. I guess the next size bigger would be the best way. The threads stilll hold and are tight. I used Permatex non hardening. Filled the tank today and no leaks. guess I'm OK. Just makes you wonder when the stuff is still barely tacky after a day to set up.
