What is everyone using for small video equipment as either a helmet camera mount or gun camera mount? I'm not looking for anything to make professional videos with, just something to record formation/extended trail/maybe a little ACM then analyze under the influence of cold beverages afterward. An audio input would be nice but not a necessity. Durability, ease of operation in the cockpit and size/weight are the most important things I'm looking for.
Thanks,
Mark Davis

Mark, I have recently started using this little guy.. 1080p , and EXTREMELY flexible in where you can put it. Have mounted on helmet, on the wings, under the wings, tail, just using the suction cup mount.. the last test for it was on the COWL of #3 of Aeroshell during the night show.. it will stay anywhere you put it..

Mark,
I have not purchased one yet but this is the one the David McGirt recommends. The Contourhd 1080p. He has made some pretty good videos using these cameras. I use a Samsung mini cam with a lipstick external camera. The battery is only good for about 30 – 45 min and it is not overly user friendly either. This is one slid on and one slide off.

4 lipstick camerasFeed into small multiplexor
Single out from multiplexor to a portable 40 GB HD.
Intercom wired into multiplexor for audio.
Both multiplexor and harddrive have ship's power.
Total weight incluing wiring - about 4 pounds.
A 30 minute flight takes up about 400mb. I can store about a 50 minute flight on a CD for the passenger to watch on any computer with Quicktime or RealPlayer.
I have about $600 in the system.

Mark,
I often found that my hud video was of limited usefulness when debriefing ACM. Now a tail mounted camera would be useful in recreating the dynamics of most of my engagements! Forward cameras would rarely be of use to me, except when I fight those trained by the U.S. Air Force (Yes, JJ this means you!!!!)
Fights On,
Mike

Mark, I will give you a JVC pro camera that's about 15 lbs you can mount to your dash but you will need a 32 in monitor to see whats in front to replace you windshield.

I have both Lipstick cameras feeding into mux then tapedeck and the one listed below that McGirt has. I prefer the one like McGirt with the exception of not being able to record the audio in from the headsets.

Looks great. Tell me more about the mount - that looks like it is different than the camera. And it stays put in the windstream? And with pos / neg G's?
I like it alot. I just would not want to lose it. I don't think I'd take my GPS mount and put it out there

Gents:
I have just installed a 4 camera system from Tim Ennis at www.motocam360.com system on my Yak 52.
I installed one camera on each of the endplates at the end of each wing and one slot camera on the hand hold on the tail and one on the top of the vertical stab. I have experienced some "teething pains" but overall I am pleased with the initial results.
The system includes a custom built 4" monitor in the cockpit so I can turn the system on/off or change the primary view while in flight or display all 4 cameras on one split screen.
The system allows me to record all music input formats including xm or ipod with ATC or intercom conversation too.
The GPS interface gives me lat/lon, speed and altitude as an overlay on the video.
Check out the website and tell Tim I sent you.

I have the contour 1080P and it does a great job picture wise...BUT...there is no way to set up a remotely operated start. It is a clumsy sliding switch mounted on the camera top. There is also no way to put in an audio feed from your comm system

So the mount is the same one on the VR Hold Website, as you can see in this picture, it will hold up on the outside of the plan..
The camera weighs 3 oz, so it is not a problem, the mount in 4 x that.. but still has no problem. I have put +6.5 and only -2 on it, but have had no problems
It is a pretty strong mount.. but like I said, the camera is not heavy..

I have both Lipstick cameras feeding into mux then tapedeck and the one listed below that McGirt has. I prefer the one like McGirt with the exception of not being able to record the audio in from the headsets.

Thanks,
Mark Davis

Dave,
Are you telling me you place that camera on your wing with a suction cup mount? I can't believe it will stay put?!
What card do you have and what is your record time as you have to start the camera on the ground and then go fly?

That is correct Keith.
As for recording (at) 1080p , I am getting about 1.2-1.4GB per hour, so it just
depends on the card ( it comes with a 2GB card), but will take up to 32GB

Dave,
That was a gutsy move trying that for the first time! I don't own that mount but I think I may try to use a small hole in my wing that is plugged with a plastic cap. I have access to securing the mount I have in that spot through the wheel well.
Also think I'll get a 4 gig card as well.
I really like that wing location!
Semper Fi,
Keith
