I'm ready to do the aileron balance on my 601, but would like to know how much weight to use. I have trim on one side, and paint as well. The upgrade comes
with 3 lbs.11oz. total of weights, plus the weight of the bolts, and I have the flex hinges. Can anyone who has completed theirs advise me as to how much weight to use on each aileron?

Hi Lynn,

I used about 8 pieces of steel on the first aileron. Then the aileron balanced nicely when hung on the wing with a few clecos.

Paul
XL installing upgrade.

When you install the aileron just add weights until the aileron balances. When fully deflected it should return to center from either direction. You are right to remember to add the bolts, washers and nuts as they do sometimes make a difference. Also consider there are two different sizes (weights) of the counter weights for adjustment. I did mine after riveting the aileron closed and with it clecoed to the rear spar.

Level the wing spars and hold the 9 degree angle of the main spar, cleco the aileron with the arm attached, use the bolts and steel plates and move them along the arm to get balance. Neutral aileron is along the inner upper aileron, hold a straight edge, (L-Angle) along the rear wing rib closest to the inner upper aileron.

It is important to set the main wing spar up at the correct angle and level the main and rear spars lengthwise before balancing the aileron.

I have done 4 of these now and if you try and make it fit while it is held in place with cleco's it won't be the same once riveted. the tightening of the hinge to the rear spar changes the angle of the aileron and if it is set at 97 degrees it will give you about 1/2 of an inch clearance once rigged and the most important thing to do is set the deflection properly 11.5 +/- 1 degree. I set my new ribs 227 mm and not the 327 called for in the plans and that gives good clearance at the tips. I don't agree with the hinge less ailerons having counter weights so all my ailerons are converted to hinged. And you can still pull the pin and test fit the aileron counterweight arm as it will be and not just held with cleco's.

I have also taken some pictures of the hinge less conversion and will post them soon.

Hi Jeff,

Your post really confused me.

My comments, and I presume some of the other folks' comments on this subject, were meant to apply to hingeless ailerons. I really don't know what happens to hinged ailerons in this process.

Still, I don't understand why Clecos yield different results from rivets. Perhaps you are not applying the Clecos to the same point as the final rivets?

Why do think there is a problem with counter weights being used with hingeless ailerons? This is what the upgrade design specifically calls for.

Thanks,

Paul
