Listers:

I'm sure this has been talked to death in the past, but I'm just finally getting started to resume building my 604XL and I'd like to verify some assumptions I have with the brain trust here on this list. I stopped building my 601XL when I felt there was a good chance mandated upgrades would be coming, and I was right. I have the upgrade kit and, since I stopped building 1/2 way through the right wing I'm in a very good place to rework the spars with a minimum of disassembly. However, going forward, I need to make a few choices, and I'm pretty certain the official upgrade to a 651XL will be a good step with regards to product acceptance, insurability, and possibly resale when I'm too old to fly.

>From what I think to be true:

- I need a new set of plans from Zenith. If I give them my old serial number they may cut me a deal on a new set of plans.......
- I'll have to scrap my rudder and build a new one for the 651XL
- I do not have to do any changes to my horizontal stabilizer or the wings once I complete the upgrade
- I'll order the 651 fuselage,canopy,and landing gear kits,

and I'll be flying in about 10 years....LOL !

Can anyone set me straight on anything incorrect and how I can/should fix it?

As always, I appreciate all of you out there that dedicate the time and knowledge that make this board so very helpful to us all.

And, Congratulations Sabrina on making the front page ! Can you post a link to the complete article? The link previously posted did not work when I tried it.

Again, thanks in advance..

Hey Tracy,

It's actually a 650 not a 651. Zenith will upgrade your plans to a 650 for $125. You actually don't have to change the rudder as it will fit but the rudders are different. The new (upgraded) 650 plans don't appear to be available yet as per Shirley last week.

The only difference between the old rudder and the new rudder is the sweep back angle. This change is purely cosmetic and provides no aerodynamic improvement and no improvement to performance. In fact, the less sweep back the vertical stabilizer has, the better it will function at the speeds this airplane flys at. Cessna actually lost some performance on their airplanes when they started sweeping the vertical tails back on them because they had to make them larger to overcome the loss in efficiency. The larger tail has more drag. The change was made to improve the looks of the airplane.
