|
|
I just completed the first of my aileron updates and in the course of
playing with the balance weights couldn't find four bolts that would
fit the job.
I'm surprised there are not four of a kind AN3 bolts to use.
What has been the required bolt to hold weights and was it in the upgrade kit?
I've considered the possibility that the two AN3-37 are for the
"light" aileron and the two AN3-30s are for the aileron with trim
{which I didn't install}.
If this is discussed in the notes or drawings, I missed it...
Thanks,
Steve

Steve,
The bolts I got in the upgrade kit did not work for me either. I had to buy bolts about 1/4 to 1/2" shorter. I guess Zenith packed in the bolt sizes that worked for them. My ailerons are polished and not painted so they must have weighed less. As long a they balance out, use whatever works.
Good luck,

Steve,
I asked Roger at Zenith the same question. He said the left aileron with the trim tab is heavier and will require more weights so they included 2 longer bolts(An3-37A).The right side (lighter) requires the 2 shorter, AN3-30A bolts.
If you don't have the trim tab,you will have to improvise, either get 2 shorter bolts or use some type of spacers.

Steve,
I have done two mods now.
On the first one, I bought shorter bolts.
On the second, I used a 10-32 die and cut the threads so the longer bolts
would work.
I guess from Zenith's view, they do not know what your ailerons weigh so
they gave bolts the would work with enough spacers attached.

Steve,
I filled the tubes with lead. The right side to a depth of 6 inches
and the left side (with the trim system) to 7 inches. Then I only needed
2 plates on the right side and 4 on the left side to balance. This was
then small enough to fit through the holes as specified in the drawings.
Of course much smaller bolts were used, AN3-15 and 16 sizes.
I didn't like the idea that it would be difficult or almost
impossible to adjust the balance or for that matter even remove the
ailerons.
If I had to do it all over, I would use a 1 inch or 1 x 3/4 tube
and use all lead weight, no side weights.
