I was coming home from West Virginia yesterday (Memorial Day) and coming through Harrisburg, PA on I-81, I saw what looked like a Zenith Zodiac on the back of a trailer being hauled west-bound.  I only caught a glimpse of the rudder and the rear fuselage, so I can't be completely sure.  Any of you taking your Zodiac for a drive yesterday?

That was me. I flew to Mt. Pocono Airport on Sunday for a Pancake
breakfast. Somebody in a Pitts cut me off in the pattern and landed
just before me. Without looking he tried to back a 180 on the active to
back taxi. I had just landing an was rolling out when he turned. I was
forced to pull off the runway to avoid hitting him. I didn't know
that the side had just been regraded with gravel. The nose wheel sunk
in and my prop shattered. I had to get a ride back to York, PA get my
trailer, go back to the Poconos, take the wings off and drive home. 110
miles by air 180 miles on a trailer. Which do I log? LOL Hoping to
get another prop before Oshkosh.

Damn! Did he at least apologize (let alone buy you a new prop)?

No never said a word, Just taxied away probably never even saw what
happened to me. The people at the airport were great. Helped to pull
me out of the gravel and used a tractor to pull the plane to a parking
spot overnight, no charge for tie-down. Couldn't get a rental car due
to Holiday weekend. Luckily my brother was free so he drove up to get
my wife and me, take us home to get my trailor. 6-1/2 hour drive for
him Sunday. Seven hour drive for me Monday, plus teardown time. Nice
way to spend Memorial day weekend.

Man, I'm sorry to bring up the topic!  I'm glad you are OK and your plane is repairable.  I had visions of someone transporting their machine to have it worked on.

Jerry,

So sorry to hear of your mishap and glad you were not injured. I admire your positive attitude in your post above despite being the obvious victim of someone else's poor flying etiquette. My temper would have likely prevailed and got me into trouble with the offending pilot had this been me. I hope you get your bird back in the air soon! Thanks for sharing.

Regards,

Dave Gardea

Peter:

VERY SORRY to hear your plight. Maybe if you contact him or his
insurance company maybe something can be resolved.

Only issue is he cut you off in the pattern... LOUSY Etiquette.
But once he is on the runway ... He OWNS the runway. All of it until
he is clear of the runway or announces clear.

After all he was a tail drager and could have handled the off runway
situation better than a trike.

Best of luck, Peter.

Barry
