I have to remount the counterbalance and I do not have the 1/8 X 3/8 AS rivet required, part number 95006 on the original plans. I have misplaced the table of part numbers 9500X VS length/material that I made up some time ago by looking through the plans. Is there another spec of rivet that would not lead to any future looseness or corrosion issue? I have most of the rivets just missing that one number. I am tempted to use a SS rivet.

Dave,

The rivets supplied in the kit are Stainless. I personally wouldn't be comfortable with hardware store rivets, but for no really good reason. If I were replacing rivets in that location, I would order the Cherry Q stainless rivets of that dimension from Aircraft Spruce. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/hapages/cherrynrivet.php The Q rivet has the higher tensile strength, which is what you are after.

Dave & Lowell,
Did I miss something? Hard to belive that the factory could not supply the specific parts via overnight mail? Probably at least as fast as ACS?

Well, yes you are missing something. I am in Canada, and anything I do not wish to pay an obscene amount of money for is three weeks away. The spec from my 1992-ish plans is for a 1/8 X 3/8 AS rivet. Aluminum body, steel mandrel. I have many leftover stainless rivets, much stronger and I am contemplating using one of those. Aircraft spruce is in Toronto, an economical and faster choice. I have always enjoyed great support from Kitfox under the McBeans, but the time and cost to import from exotic foreign countries is irritating.

I think I was wrong with the stainless rivet idea. Thanks for those that responded. I was thinking that the rivets attached to the spar as well as the skin. I guess not.

Hi Lowell, the rivets in question are the ones that extend into the spar that runs down the flap and serves as the pivot. the biggest danger I can immediately think of in using something as strong as a Q rivet is that it may crush the foam rib in that area before it's mandrel breaks.

I have emailed to Kitfox and will wait for advice.

Dave ,

Likely a Avex rivet will do you fine. I have lots of them.
Most supply house do as well. I buy them in bulk from Textron in Toronto.
