Anyone using a B&C SD-20 alternator on the vacuum pad? I was not getting any juice on initial engine runs, but I’m wondering if it really has to get up to “run up” engine speeds to produce much. I did basic trouble shooting in the hangar and didn’t see anything amiss.

An ALT should be producing power at the most modest idle settings. A generator would behave as you described.

Mine works fine at idle speeds - I test it each time by energizing it before the primary.

Did you connect it up with a B&C external regulator? I've got an SD-20 as a secondary on my RV-8 and I find that it works nicely. At idle, however, it definitely doesn't put out full current. At cruse it does alright, but it can't keep up if I've got all the lights turned on. This is to be expected, though, since its only rated at 20amps.

Although my B&C 60amp alternator seems to work fine at lower rpm settings, the 20 seems to need more revs to offset the load and show a positive current.

How are you troubleshooting it? It will not output anything until the main alternator 'fails'. Start the engine, pull the breaker or turn the main alternator off and the secondary should kick in.

I just got my plane flying, and thought I had a problem with my B&C SD-20. It did not appear to work at all (voltage at battery voltage when turned on during ground runs). Rather than trouble shoot the backup alternator, I decided to "fix" after first flight. Once I got the plane flying and running at higher RPM, it worked fine.

B&C used to have a graph, that plotted AMP output vs RPM for all of their alternators. I just looked on their web-site and couldn't find it. My memory of the graph is that the SD-20 doesn't produce it's full 20 am output until it's turning near max RPM's. My SD-20 Low Voltage light is lit when the engine is at idle. I have a check list item on my run-up to check that it extinguishes when I go through my run up.
