There is a Kolb Flyer on Barnstormers. While I am not interested in buying it, I would like to know if anyone has ever flown one. It looks like a twin engine Ultrastar. I think the ad said 180 pounds. Any comments? John? Dennis?

Years ago one was built by EAA Chapter 373 at Hagerstown, Indiana as a Chapter project. They were unsuccessful when trying to fly it above ground effect. Many prop changes and no luck.

Jack and gang,
I was looking on the internet about a week ago just looking up Kolbs
on another rainy day here and ran across this old picture of Homer in a
Flyer.
I sent this picture to John Hauck and asked if he knew anything about
this one. John says he thinks it was a prototype from the mid 80s and is
hanging in Homer's hanger. Doesn't look like it had a very good view out
the front. Must not have worked out. Good for us Kolbers.

Jack- The Kolb Flyer that is listed on Barnstormers has twin Solo engines. I have no idea what your photo shows. I did find references to the twin engine Flyer from an old Ultralight News article. Interesting reading. I have no idea how common, or how successful they were.

Jack- I went to the FAA web site and looked up the N number of the plane in your photo. It is a Kolb Feather, circa 1984. I never heard of it. It is also mentioned as a Twinstar. No idea why, maybe experimental. Very informative.

Bill,
Yes – definitely a Flyer – but highly modified. This one with the geared Solo’s would have enough power to fly very well; this is what Dell Cross had for power as I recall. In addition to the engine changes, it has a modified landing gear and of course … that nose! We never did that either.

Bill, the Flyer was the predecessor to the UltraStar. Twin Solo engines, though I believe earlier versions had some different smaller engines. It didn't fold like the US, had a two spar / two strut wing design unlike the single large spar and single strut of the US. I've seen a few but never flown one. I'm told it couldn't quite maintain level flight on one engine, but could cover a lot of ground in the shallow descent.
