Non certified fabric at ACS

Does anyone on the forum have experience with the non certified 2.7 oz. dacron Spruce is offering (part no. 09-00300). Better yet, anyone compared it with the 2.7 oz. Polyfiber fabric? The cracks in the Aerothane are starting to turn to peeled areas and at less than half the cost it makes doing a re-cover on Zulu Delta possible sooner than I had hoped.

This is by no means a scientific response, but has been my understanding for many years.

Manufacture and sales of virgin (unshrunk) polyester-dacron aircraft fabric is limited to one or a couple mills.

A certain amount of lubricant is necessary during weaving to prevent burning the threads. The lighter and tighter the fabric, the more lube necessary. Thus HS90X was a very difficult to seal and fill all the damn pin holes.

Biggest expense with polyfiber is its certification, just like other aircraft parts. That polyfiber stamp costs as much as the fabric.

I have used generic virgin polyester-dacron with success. Would use it again if necessary.

I always use uncertified...works just fine.. You can scrub it with
mek or acetone to clean the mill goo ... I have used the 1.7 or 8 and
the 2.7... Herb

Herb, John, I was more concerned about the quality of the weave and if it shrinks uniformly. As it turns out this is the same stuff that they sell for use as peel ply in composite lay ups. I've used a bunch of it for that and it's free of any kind of sizing, at least all that I've ever gotten from them. I'll have to check what I have in stock. I may have enough to cover the wings left over from vacuum bagging projects. Herb, did you use the lighter weight for ailerons and flaps?

Realize you asked Herb.

Flaps are vulnerable to FOD and prop drumming, plus scrw drivers and other
tools and stuff.

I use heavy fabric on flaps and ailerons.

I have 18 year old/3,000+ dacron on my flaps that are still serviceable.

I used the 2.7 for all surfaces when I rebuilt my Kolb MkIII back in the mid 90's. Used 1.7 or 1.8 (which is it?) for all surfaces on my Firefly..Same for my N3 Pup...and Ultra star...Herb

John, Good point, I was thinking of making them as light as possible so I could decrease the balance weight. Plan B, use tubing instead of steel rod and pack one end with lead. I understand the flaps and ailerons on the B-36 were framed with magnesium. I suppose that's a little extreme, though. :-}
