I am almost ready to move my project to the airport. It is about 15 miles away. I am planning to hire a flatbed car hauler to take it there for me. I am down to installing the panel and final assembly.

My question is, where would the best place be on the airframe to connect the winch to pull the airframe onto the tilted flatbed? Or should it be winched at all? It seems it would be fairly heavy to push it on safely.

The engine and prop are installed.

We used a tow strap connected to the mains. I steered it on and off the trailer with tow bar connected to the front wheel.

It really depends on the angle of the car hauler when it's in the down position. I've see car haulers that get the slope really shallow, and others like climbing a hill. Either way, if you put a rope bridle on the steps and use the winch, that should be OK. If the wheel pants aren't installed, the nose gear should be OK too, as long as the plane doesn't get hung up going on the trailer. Having a few friends push is always a good thing.
When we put my Pitts (assembled) on the flat-bed for the Christmas light parade, we just pushed it up on the trailer. No winch required.

Hi Dave

I went through this process about a month ago. See the pix above.

I found that using 8' ramps, the fuse (along with engine) was surprising easy to roll onto a flat bed trailer that stood about 2' off the ground.

No winch was necessary. It took 4 people, (one with arm arm in a sling!) to roll the fuse up the ramp on onto the trailer in a matter of seconds. I guess it all has to do with moving an object up an inclined plane (I guess I should have paid more attention in Physics class!).

We nailed blocks fore and aft of the wheels and used heavy duty tire down straps with tensioners to secure the fuse. It is hard to see, but the straps on upper end of the gear legs are secured to the opposite side of the trailer. They cross under the fuse and seemed to hold everything very secure.

The fuse did not budge at all during the 60 mile move.

If you haven't already, confirm the width of the trailer you are going to use. I had to search for several days to find a rental trailer that was over 8' wide. Mine was 8' 3". The -10 wheels are surprisingly far apart.

I just wrapped a wide strap around the nose gear area (no fairings)
and used a boat winch, and steered with the towbar. I made
double-ramps that were 8'-10' long each, so that I'd have a very
shallow slope to climb, over about 15' or so. Once on the trailer
I just strapped it down with chocks by strapping the mains and nose
gear to the trailer very tight with cam straps. It rides really
well, actually.

Dave I am about 2 months from making the move myself. When it's all moved don't be afraid to post what worked and what didn't. I don't have the towbar yet, so I guess I need to start there, but I was leaning towards using the nose gear and the winch.

I moved mine with the tail cone on, but the engine off, so my experience is not so relevant. It was very easy for me to winch up using the tail tie-down. As others said, measure the bed width of the truck. The place where I rented this truck had 2 tilt-beds, but only one was wide enough, and just then barely.
