The second time is the charm, I guess. The first time I shot this video I didn't see the streaks on the wind screen until I watched the video footage so yesterday I was extra thorough in making sure the lexan was spotless. Anyway here's the link:

Looks good Rick. Now all you need to do is a touch and go on every sand bar, or stop and do a little fishing.

Some of the sandbars certainly look long enough, but I'd have to get out on them to look them over before I'd try it. Sure would be fun, though.

Those sand bars look very doable to me. Some look like they have a lot of gravel in them, which makes them even more suitable.

Before one lands out, they must accept the fact that if they break the airplane, it may be very difficult to retrieve for repair.

Retrieving a plane off the sand bar looks simple to me. Do it by water. In Alaska we land on sand/gravel bars all the time. You just need to look them over carefully before you set down.

Well...I have been fortunate enough to make quite a few off field and sand bar landings in my mkIII, in Alaska, my self, Knik River, a spot somewhere near the Dalton Highway south of Cold Foot, an unknown river 30 miles east of Deadhorse, and on the beach of the Arctic Ocean 12 miles south of Barrow, where Wiley Post and Wil Rogers were killed in 1935, to name a few. Some of those would have taken a helicopter and a lot of money to retrieve me and my mkIII.

Many of the sand bars on the Tallapoosa, Coosa, and Alabama Rivers are very landable, but to rescue a broken mkIII would be very difficult and expensive.

I had my Ultrastar rescued from a swamp 1/2 mile from Wetumpka Airport 08A by an old H-19, in 1985. Lucky for me, my buddy owned and flew the H-19. It didn't cost me more than a six pack. Without the helicopter, it would have been a very difficult mission to accomplish.

I made my statement tongue and cheek, about the touch and goes, but if I was going to do it, I would use the same technique that works in snow. Touch it down lightly with lots of power, let it settle a bit, then go around and see what kind of a rut you made. One thing that seemed noticeable to me was that it seemed to take a lot of ground for you to take off on the grass. Once in the air it climbed pleasingly quickly, but I thought that it took a lot of runway to get off. Hard to tell on video. My point is don't short your self, because sand if it is fluffy will cause a lot of drag. I have never had the guts to do a water skiing routine with mine, so I don't know how fast you need to be to "walk" on water.

On my trip back from Texas with the Firestar, I touched down on the Great Salt Lake. It felt gooey, so I pulled all the throttle I could get and got back on top of it and got off the ground. I almost needed a change of pants afterward realizing what would have been if I had slowed too much to get back airborne.
Have fun, but do it carefully,
Larry

John,
Sounds like you had a great vacation in Alaska. Knik River has good gravel bars and lots of time the biggest danger is staying out of the other aircrafts way as they land and takeoff. It's a great one to practice on, being so close to the Anchorage, Palmer, Wasilla and Birchwood Airports. Lots of streams with-in 30 miles of Dead horse, but the only river I can think of with-in 30 miles of Deadhorse, is the Colville River, but it is to the West, towards Barrow. The Helmericks have a very nice house on the Colville and know the area better than anyone else and are a good source of local knowledge. A lot of the bars on it can be a real bear to land on, as a lot of it is soft sand (had a landing craft stuck on one for several days) While you were up there I think you received some misinformation on the Wiley Post crash, as he crashed on a small lake (he was on floats) and not on the beach. Most of the beaches are great to land on. The biggest problems I've had in that area are the mosquitoes and the Arctic Fog. Most anywhere you bust up a plane in Alaska is going to be pricy. I have a friend that all he does is recover downed planes and he makes a really good living.
The only reason I suggested recovery by water is that the river he was flying over appeared to be large enough to get a boat and barge to the sandbar if needed. I thought that would be a whole lot cheaper than trying to get to it over land. I don't know the area, so I could be dead wrong.
Sounds like your Alaska trip was a trip of a life time. Where did you start from? Any chance you wrote something up? Bet it would make interesting reading and I would be very interested to read it. How did the Kolb do and what engine did you use? Any changes you'd make to the plane/engine if you were to do it again?
Sounds like you’re a really high time Kolb pilot/owner. When you have the time, how about a write up on each Kolb you have owned or flown, with what engine and any other info for a Kolb newbe like myself? I'm the new owner of a previously owned Firestar KXP, but have been too sick with Chemo to fly it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
Gene

For most of the sand bars the way into them from land is footpaths so the only real access to get a plane out would be the river and that bridge at the beginning of the footage has neither height nor span enough to take a Mk III. Still, on the right day I could give any bush pilot tendencies I might have a good try out......

Bill, It's the Arkansas (R Kan Zas, locally, not R Kan Saw) River between State Route 55 (that's the bridge) and Mulvane, KS. Yep, it's the Great Plains and that stretch is pretty flat.

Excellent video, Rick. I especially liked your near redline dive towards the river and the hard slip on final approach. That yaw string was really out there.

I have had many great trips to Alaska, three flights from Alabama, in my Kolb mkIII.

The gravel bar I landed on was 30 miles (aprx) east of Deadhorse on the Canning River, south of Brownlow Point.

I know Jim and Teena Helmericks. Have stayed with them the last two flights to the North Slope.

I didn't say Wiley Post and Wil Rogers crashed on the beach, I said I landed there, beside the monuments on the sand dune between the lagoon they crashed in and the beach I landed on. Problem with the beach there was extremely dry soft sand laced with many large river rocks.

I wrote an article about my 1994 flight. You can pull it up on the EAA archives. I think it was published in the May, June, July, August, and September 1995 issues of the EAA Experimenter Mag.

I have written a lot about my Kolbs and flights since I joined the Kolb List in 1998. That stuff can be retrieved from the Kolb List Archives.

Are you still in Alaska? Where?

Dennis did a good job on that excursion.

We get into a lot of situations we do no like, but I feel is all part of the exciting game of building and flying Kolb airplanes.

I would not take a million dollars for all my good and bad experiences with Kolbs. Sure don't want to repeat a lot of my episodes.
