I accidentally ordered two 5/16 inch reams from Brown Tool. This is the ream you need to making to make the final diameter holes in the attachment doubler for the 601XL wing upgrade. This is a "Chucking Reamer" that can be seen on their web site. It cost me $27.70 and I'm willing to sell it for $25 and pay the shipping to you (inside the US). The first $25 check I receive takes it. Please contact me off list.
I just finished the reaming of my first wing attachment doubler yesterday and it came out nicely.

Since your experience with reaming these holes worked out well, can you share some tips with us. My first crack at this didn't go so well. I managed to ovalize the web and am now trying again with a new rear web, spar caps and doublers. Anyway:
1. How large did you drill the holes before reaming?
2. Hand held drill or drill press? If drill press, how did you ensure that the reamer was centered?
3. Did you assemble the wing spars with the center section while reaming?
4. If the wing/center section wasn't mated while you reamed, did you ream both front and rear web assemblies at the same time?
Any tips you would like to share would be appreciated. I'm new to this reaming business.

Doug I know nothing of the 601 mod. I'm building a 701. However.
Standard practice would be to drill 1/64" under size before reaming. If you are working with sheet metal though, do not drill to this size. Unless the hole is around 1/8" or smaller you cannot just drill the sheet metal to size. the hole will be disgusting and certainly not round, depending on the sheet metal thickness. Please buy a few #1 center drills. They are 1/8" dia. and dirt cheap and you can make a couple of 601's with just a half dozen. You can center punch first and then drill straight through thin sheet metal with these. Then open the hole up with a step drill to 1/64" under the ream size. Then ream to size. But, But, But,But.
When possible use a drill press. DO NOT HOLD THE PART WITH YOUR HANDS or you will soon have no hands. Sandwich the part if you can. Put a piece of scrap wood on the sheet metal and clamp on the wood. You will get a much nicer hole. I have lots of reamers and I use them to slowly work up to the size I want or I will use a step drill.....Geoff
