Swing a Hamilton compass?

Hi guys,  I removed the Hamilton Instruments, vertical card, magnetic compass from my KF lll. It was off by 20 degrees. I've read nearly all of the proceedures for swinging it: set North, take out half of error at South, same with East and West.  I can set any two adjacents but the opposites are off by 20 -25 degrees.  I've spent hours in my front yard and can get no closer than about 12 degrees all around.  The screws have no markings that're supposed to point to 9 O'Clock. I can't imagine that it's broke. One thought was that a gear got jumped, somehow.  I'm ready to take it apart but don't know if what I find will be self-evident. Do you think there'll be alignment marks inside? Anyone know how to contact a technician who works on them?  They went out of business a while ago. A new one is incompatable with my finances.   Thanks, guys.  Larry

I think it's a lot more likely that the steel tubing near it is magnetized and causing the errors.  Search the list archives and you'll find a lot of discussion from folks who have tried, successfully and not-so-successfully, to degauss their fuselages.

I had a vertical card compass in mine that worked pretty well.  I tried to mount it as far as possible from any tubes.

Larry,

  I have the same problem you do. I cant' get my Hamilton  compass anywhere close unless I rotate the compass cockeyed in the housing  (about 30 degrees off level) The adjustment screws don't help.I just use it to  tell me if I am going on a general cardinal heading. It looks better than  the boat compass I used to have. so I just live with it and use my Tru Trak  enhanced vertical speed unit for direction as it has an internal GPS.

From what you've written I gather the following: You have removed  

the Hamilton compass from your plane and you are standing in your  

front yard with it, trying to set it. That's how I read what you've  

written...is this correct? If so, that might be the problem.
