My efforts to locate a rivet squeezer locally have come up dry. What size rivet gun do I need to drive the 3/16ths rivets in the XL upgrade kit? Will a 3x gun do it?

Hi Phil,
My shopping (research?) says a 3x gun can barely set a 3/16 hard aluminum
rivet. If you want to go that way I would suggest getting a 4x gun. There
doesn't seem to be a difference in price for these things. I think the
difference between 3x and 4x guns is a small difference in the length of the
barrel on the gun.
You might find it makes more sense to replace the rivets with bolts as
allowed by the drawings. This may be a little more expensive and a bit
heavier, but the technology is one we all are familiar with. Besides, then
you don't need to buy a rivet gun and associated accessories like sets and
bucking bars.

I tried both a 3X and the 4X. The award definitely goes to the 4X gun which
sets the rivet quickly and it is easier to get a nice result.
It will take the same number of hits each time when you acheive the state
of Yo.
Also I found a 2 lb sledge hammer head as a bucking bar worked better.
This was my first rivet pounding project so I enlisted an RV helper. It is
a two person job.

I used a 4X gun and a 5lb bucking block of steel. The AN470AD-6-15's set just fine. The trick is to not pull or let off the trigger without having pressure (arm strong) against the factory head. The bucking bar just has to touch to shop head, you don't have to press hard with the bucking bar. Once you have set a few you can hear and feel when it is set right.
The 3X gun wasn't doing a good job. There were a couple I had to remove and reset, the 4X gun expanded the rivets much better, the 3X gun rivets came out real easy, not so with the 4X gun, it took more work to get them out and that is a good thing here.
Here is how you can make it a one man job:

That is what I used or the upgrade. A 4X might be better for the -6 rivets but heavy handed for the -5. The 3X will do it though.

I had no problems with a 3X gun.

A 3X is a good all-around size and should set the 3/16th rivets IF you size the bucking bar properly. 5 pounds seems to do a good job.
