Lynn, Red Hamilton from CA, Tailwind owner, and Oshkosh race winner last year when asked if he built his plane replys, "I'm the 12th owner and 1st finisher of the plane". I don't know maybe that's a record.

Lynn, I'll introduce you to Red Hamilton in Oshkosh and you can ask him. What's your Oshkosh schedule? There is a Tailwind flyin in Baraboo WI at Jim Clement's Sat July 24th. The Tailwinds marshall up there on the way to Osh. I drive up there Saturday morning, sleep in my van and head to Oshkosh Sun morning. You might enjoy the Baraboo event. Clement has built 12 Tailwinds and they usually have a seminar.. That is the same number but he finished all 12.

Ok, Pat, I got my schedule worked out....I fly outta here on
Thursday, 7-21-2010, and head for Mitchell, SD, to take part in the
AirVenture Cup Race.....yeee--haaa!
Then on Sunday, the 25th, we all...about 60 planes...head for
Oshkosh. So I'll be in Oshkosh (hopefully) Sunday afternoon, and will
probably stay for 4-5 days.
I guess I'm the only Kitfox in the "race"....I put that in quotes
because I won't be racing anybody but the fuel gauge in my plane,
figuring I can make it easily on the on-board fuel, if I run LOP, and
maybe even if I didn't. But I'm determined to make the
distance...about 443 sm....to Snow Crest (this years' finish line)
running just the way I always run it these days...LOP.
So no Baraboo for me this year....

Vic-
That stands for "lean of peak"(EGT), and it refers to running the
fuel mixture setting so lean that the exhaust gas temperatures
(EGT's) actually run cooler than they would at a normally-high-temp
lean setting. You save fuel running this way, but don't produce as
much power, and the engine will last longer running LOP, because the
CHT's run cooler, and cooler (up to a point) is better. A lot of
people don't believe this, but I've seen the results in my own
engine, and heard of other reports that reflect better engine life.

Lynn, Good luck in the race. Look for Red Hamilton. He has a white Tailwind. He averaged over 200 mph last year to win his class. That class is a hot class populated with RV's and the canard pushers. I would imagine he will be there this year. Last year he flew to Baraboo and then the race. Where does the race originate this year?

Ok, Pat, I got my schedule worked out....I fly outta here on Thursday, 7-21-2010, and head for Mitchell, SD, to take part in the AirVenture Cup Race.....yeee--haaa!
Then on Sunday, the 25th, we all...about 60 planes...head for Oshkosh. So I'll be in Oshkosh (hopefully) Sunday afternoon, and will probably stay for 4-5 days.
I guess I'm the only Kitfox in the "race"....I put that in quotes because I won't be racing anybody but the fuel gauge in my plane, figuring I can make it easily on the on-board fuel, if I run LOP, and maybe even if I didn't. But I'm determined to make the distance...about 443 sm....to Snow Crest (this years' finish line) running just the way I always run it these days...LOP.
So no Baraboo for me this year....

Yes, I see Red Hamilton and another person listed in the Tailwind.
There are 5 others in his class. I'm the lone plane in what they call
the Sprint-LSA class, so I guess I've "won" my class already...*IF* I

Lynn, See you in Oshkosh. If you are betting on Red's class, I'd bet on him. He's got a hopped up 0-320 with I think 10 to 1 pistons and a Catto prop. If you get a chance to talk to Red, you have to be standing in front of him. The poor guy can't hear very well and the 1st time I met him I thought he was preoccupied when I asked him a question and he didn't answer. Then I figured out he didn't hear me. They say that the Tailwind is noisy as Hell.

He sounds like me...hard of hearing from getting the ears too close
to BIG motors (Chrysler Hemi's in my case). I'll be sure to look him
up when I get to Mitchell. My hangar mate has a nephew who is running
in the Sport Class with an SX-300, and he's pretty fast too. I just
hope there's some beer left for me when I come crawling across the
finish line. : )
The way the weather is looking for the week around here, I'm starting
to think the "Lynn is traveling" jinx is coming up again. I have
ordered numbers for the left side of the plane and for under the left
wing, and they are supposed to get here Wednesday, so I couldn't
possibly leave earlier than Thursday....without leaving about $80

I was going to paint them myself (after all, I did the whole plane)
but opted to call an aircraft graphics place, and bit the bullet, and
ordered the numbers. I'm getting 18"+ tall numbers, in the Dale
Earnhardt #3 style, in white with red trim around the outside, and
self adhesive. The numbers are $30 each, and 2-day shipping will b at
least $20, I'm thinking. The main man at the race headquarters liked
my #3 on the tail (they request pictures of the planes for their race
program) and said that the number 3 was already given out, but he
would ask the guy if he'd give it up....I guess the guy did, because
I was assigned the number. So the "sort of 3" on the right side of
the plane stays as is, and the numbers I'm getting will go on the
left side and under the left wing for easy identification from the
ground. I figure that I've got enough to do to get ready, so I popped
for the (hopefully) good-lookin' numbers.
Besides, I would want to leave the 2" brush for painting the fence,
and spend a day masking and taping, and all the attendant agony of
doing the job right.
