Does anyone have a good source for a spinner for the Yak-18T? It has the standard V-530 2-blade prop. Please let me know. Thanks!

GT Propeller in Italy has made one that is about 18 inches wide, similar to the large MT spinner. It will likely be available in the next few months. They have about 24 orders waiting for this product around the world.

A new spinner for my UTVA-66 from Hartzell is $4000 US.

Just as a comparison.

Yeahh
Just as a comparison a new overhauled Russian prop with the hub would be around 4000 and a full overhaul for your blades would be 2000 . Plus a spinner on a Yak not only is not necessary but introduce new risk of vibration and complexity. Each time you need to inspect your prop you have to unmount the spinner first which takes hours.
I am really not convinced about that unnecessary device sorry guys. We are speaking about russian Yak, not Cirrus or Cessna......

Also, when an 18T spinner is installed if you do not have a timing disc used for timing engines with prop spinners (http://www.aircraft-tool.com/shop/detail.aspx?PRODUCT_ID=E25) and you need to check the mag timing, you must remove a portion of the spinner backing plate to gain access to the timing marks on the prop flange. After doing it once, you'll wish you had the timing disc.

The 18T spinner on the front of a CJ-6 is a true thing of beauty. So much character and the impression of power! Hmmmm Hmmmm Hmmmm!

I modified mine a little so that I could get it off easier (easy 10 minutes). But I do not think these things are worth $4,000! There is just not that much complexity in it. It could even be simplified somewhat.

For that kind of money - I'd most likely go "ugly".

$$$$ Wow! Maybe I'll dust off that set of plans for a custom 20" spinner I have put on the back burner. Looks like the yak world needs an affordable spinner that looks good as well.

BTW, I have a Yak-18T spinner in my collection and it goes on and off in Minutes, not hours. I have my paddle blades off now for repaint on the aft side. Pulled bearings off and regreased w/new seals. Doesn't really take long at all. But, it did the first time: many moons ago.

The UTVA actually did not come with a spinner. The one on mine was added, maybe off a Queenair, not sure. However, I went back to Hartzell and asked for a chrome new factory replacement for that model prop, and that was the quote. Sigh.... UTVA-66 now back to stock configuration! Smile

P.S. please give me your buddies name and contact info if you would not mind.

No one is trying to convince you Didier! Honest!

It's just a matter of individual taste. I have a YAK-18T spinner on my YAK-50 and love the way it looks. It takes all of about 20 minutes to pull the dome off, but of course I use an electric screw driver and put in new screws everytime I do it. Prop balancing is actually easier now because I have an easy location to add balancing weights. That said, I also have no gills on my engine. None. I also live in North Carolina where it does not get REALLY cold. I've put about 800 hours on the engine that way... No serious issues yet. I also have an oil cooler with a thermostat, and that REALLY regulates the oil temp in the cooler weather, but it probably is not something everyone should do either.

Thank you all for the great feedback and insights into the Yak-18T spinner question. It sounds like the vibration/timing risks can be readily addressed, as well as the removal/installation time. I see prices quoted from $2200 (all new GT Propeller design) to $4000 (a new Hartzell spinner for the UTVA-66). Does anyone have a lead on a source for a "stock" 18T spinner? Or price? I would think they would run less than the ones cited above. Let me know. Thanks again!

Geeees its been so long, its hard to explain. I replaced 6 bolts with 6 7/16" bolts and fiber lock nuts. As it stand right now, I unscrew the screws around the base of the spinner. I than remove the 8 screws that hold the 2 cross-over pieces that are directly behind the blades. Lastly I remove the 6 -7/16" nut bolts that hold two back plate hafts to the prop flange. If at this point I wish to remove the whole prop, I just have remove the prop lug nuts and the rest of the spinner plate is behind that.

Wirlwind propellers is in the process of making a spinner for the V530, I believe its around a 19” dia. with a cost of around $1500. Also the new Composite Blades that Wirlwind are making are great, they look very nice and have added 5 kts. to my cruise speed.
